Russell,
probably worth removing that sheet metal plate behind the points box to see if there's any evidence of the advance mechanism dragging on it, which often happens if the points box securing bolts have been over-tightened.

If that's not the problem, time to check the condition of the advance weights... :(

I'd have thought that the engine would be pretty gutless, with the timing at higher rpm so retarded.

Oddly enough it seemed to go quite well, I will have a look at the weights again another day. I took that plate off and it didn't appear that anything had hit it or been in contact with it.

Van goes really well. It actually ticks over now which is a massive development :D I'm really quite impressed at how given a good tune it really seems to go ok.

sam,
I guess ticking over properly is a good start, but if it's only advancing 3 teeth from the static timing position, that's 22* total, so there's a risk of overheating if it's worked hard.

It _will_ go much better with the ignition advance working correctly... ;)

There may have been no evidence of the advance dragging on the plate in the past but what's happening since you screwed it all back is what you need to worry about.

the other thing is that if you use one of the cover screws or even the condenser side screw, for the fixed part of the points they can drag on the cam too

You havn't done something silly like put the bob weights on back to front or the cam in the wrong way?

dont ask

May be an instance when a new set of weights is needed

Sam didn't take my advice which was rip the pox thing out and put a nice D*lly engine in and a disc box.

Sam, I have a "recent" engine that I dont need. Its hung around for a bit and I know nothing of its history, but its all there and if it helps or bits of it help get in touch. I am going to stick it in the flea market bit anyway.
