A bit OT, but I just watched a man time his car up 180 degrees out. It didn't have much compression. I laughed.

Is that on a cold engine, hot engine or just warm and cuddly?

'Throttle wide open' or 'throttle closed' is the one which really makes a difference...

At close of play today, decided to do a few tests on an engine, using all possible combinations of hot/cold/open or closed throttle.

CBA to write it all out now, as I need to get to the pub and try to spend some 'funny money' which was sent from North of the border, but the readings are about 30 to 40 psi lower if you forget to press the throttle pedal down.

( p.s. Leak down testing is undoubtedly a far better diagnostic tool than a simple compression test. )

well most technicians pressurise the bore via an adaptor in the spark plug hole

but as most insn't necessarily correct we could put it up the exhaust pipe

(Im in the process of making a crude one from a schrader valve and an old sparkplug and a tyre inflater with a gauge .....
sticky black plastic and Vals old knickers optional  )
