No problem with the fluid, I wouldn't have said they were that hot by most standards, just a bit of a problem that all the heat goes into the c.v. joint. It probably would have been ok with the proper ligarex strap.

Putting a new battery on it has meant it starts more reliably. The alternator is still being controlled by the external 2cv regulator, and is charging a little high, probably because of a bad connection somewhere around the ignition switch, I might go back to the Bee-Em regulator and see if that's ok with the new battery.
I've not changed the starter, it's still got the little slither of wood behind one brush. The plan is still to fit a new Valeo type, but that will be when I change the engine, gearbox, and repair the steering rack. I might as well do them all at the same time, sometime over the next few months.

No still BMW, just a slightly different variant.

Ah yes, I read it as did I have plans change the type of engine I was using. So to hopefully clarify, I'm planning on changing the whole engine and replacing it with one that looks identical but makes more power. The current engine will be kept as a spare, with a possible view to modifying it in the future.

I've not posted anything interesting here for a while, and that's not necessarily about to change. The car's eaten another driveshaft, it was clicking away loud enough for people to hear it coming down the road, and it was making me wince any time I had to brake hard. There's a little line of grease on the back of the old one where something has tried to punch it's way out, looks like I was on borrowed time again.

It's also looking really grubby these days, it was so nice and clean when I first did the engine swap, but that's the down side of driving it through the winter and having cylinder heads in the wheel arches.

I going to blame the driveshaft failure on the fact that it was riding quite high, and I've now lowered it back to the 'correct' height, so the shafts are straight again. I was wondering if the angle was also generating excess heat in the joints. The inner driveshafts are too hot to touch after a run, but I'm not sure if the heat is coming from the joint or the disc. I've got some vented discs to go on at some point, I haven't decided how I'm going to fit them yet, but I'm aware of all the options.

They are new, just a bit dirty but will clean up fine, from ebay £19.45 inc postage, sorry Harley

Before anyone asks, no I haven't fixed any of the other stuff that's wrong with it, plus one of the rear wheel bearings is howling like a goodun, and the clutch is slipping.
