I'm off to Shetland on Monday to watch the annual 'Up Helly Aa' Viking Fire Festival, which is the biggest fire festival in Europe. More info. below, if you're interested, and there'll be live camera feeds on the day (Tuesday). :)

Sorry, right. I'm with you now. Yes, in this case, I agree. It'd be wrong to release "the wheels on the motherfucking bus go round and round", basically.

If football is so jam-packed with squeaky clean players, club staff, enthusiasts and audiences and it's just one or two of them who give this sport a bad name then I'm surprised they haven't managed to change its reputation. Since the 1970s it's been known for violence, racism and the off-pitch sexual shenanigans of the players. (I realise the last example is far less important but it helps to adequately paint a picture of the people we are dealing with) and nowadays as everybody has a television and access to these football matches being shown round the clock then it's my opinion that the games should be played by people who are better able to set examples to the audiences regarding fair play, sportsmanship and behaviour.

I'm not sure that football is jam packed with squeaky clean players or fans, all I know is that not all football fans are morons. I can see where you're coming from (and lord knows I have no particular axe to grind for football) but I do genuinely believe that football is gradually cleaning up its act. See, f'rinstance, how seriously racist abuse at matches is taken these days. This can only be a good thing, and I believe is supported by the majority of football fans who are decent folk (and not morons). The players, however, do seem to be mainly ill bred louts, which is a shame. But the statement I had an issue with was that one about all football fans being morons, which annoyed me.

I visited the Shetlands a few years ago and I've got a liking for the islands,it was almost midsummer when I was there [the week before "Simmer Dim" actually] and it never got dark.
I'd love to go back this time of the year and maybe see the Northern Lights.
Anyways .....heres another linky ...

Football is cleaning up its act??
Like the recent incident of the ballboy who was wasting time .....and got kicked for his trouble by an overpaid thug in a Chelsea shirt? ....or the fact that the spoiled rich little ballboy had actully boasted on some internet social site that he was gonna waste time?

Racist abuse? .....its still going on though ....even some the players and officials have recently been guilty of it.

And the case last year of the Div 1 player who got locked up for rape .....and the "decent folk" who posted the girls name on the internet.

OK .....so maybe not all football fans are morons .....but IMO most of them are.
btw ....the Dictionary meaning of "mo'ron" is "a mentally deficent person/fool".....I used the term "moron" because tbh,I cant actually think of any sport more boring to hear anyone discussing than football.

I actually found it "annoying" that my local football club got kicked out of their ground for not paying the rent to the owners ......and then had a new stadium built less than half a mile from the original one ......mostly at the local councils expense .....in other words "out of my council tax contributions"

Oh ;) ......and it also annoys me when some-one points out that my posts are grammatically incorrect.

best regards
T.

Actually, I don't know why I've taken it upon myself to defend football fans. Like I say, I couldn't care less if the whole sport (well, "game") disappeared forever tomorrow. Its all pervasiveness in our culture annoys me intensely, particularly the fact that football has its own dedicated section on the Radio 4 midnight news. Why not other sports? Why not ice hockey or water polo? Bollocks to it ... slag off football and its fans all you want. :)

I'm not saying that you can't have an opinion about football, just that a lot of the comments are narrow minded and take no account of the fact that there are thousands, sorry, millions who find the game exciting and have no desire to smash the opponents supporters face in.

I lived through the dark ages of 1970's football violence and there is nowhere near the same degree of organised thuggery that prevailed at that time in the current game - racism, unfortunately, exists in all walks of live, albeit much reduced in these enlightened times, and to blame football as being the repository of all things racist is just plain bollocks.....

Hi Terry, this will be my third trip to Shetland. First went there in September '11 and went there again in October last year. The shetland.org webcam pages have been in my bookmarks for the past 18 months or more  I'm currently looking into buying a house on the most northerly of the Shetland Islands, called Unst. :)

Bought a compressor and air tools from Aldi 10 months ago, including an impact wrench. Items have 3yr warranty.

Couple of weeks ago the impact wrench stopped working (faulty valve). Contacted Austrian manufacturer, Walter, about this and next day they sent a courier round to pick up the faulty part. Two weeks later Mr Courier has just delivered a brand-new replacement, in a very smart carry case - which the original didn't have!

Moral: keep your receipts, and purchase budget gear from German budget outlets like Aldi and Lidl. Great service, and I didn't even have to pay for postage!
