Black and silver plates aren't picked up by ANPR cameras, I don't think. Which is one good reason to have them if you can fit them legally.

There's a lot of myths about ANPR . You have to ask yourself why would you not want ANPR to pick your vehicle up? Oh yes if you have no insurance,MOT or Excise licence, or if you are wanted by the police. It follows that if you have your car stolen then ANPR wouldn't find it either.

Vehicles reg If I recall right before July 1972 can have black and white or black and silver plates fitted, after that you are required by law to fit the reflective plates with the required BSI and E markings. Anything else is not legal and if you can afford to pay any fines so be it,but please don't moan about being stopped by the police, made late for your ferry and failing your MOT... :P

You are quite correct, funny reg plates were one of my bones of contention as a 'pedantic plod'. However I suspect that the majority of police officers aren't interested or have no idea of the legal requirements.I have noticed even some officers private vehicles don't comply, but that's another story :o It's a matter for the individual...........

I've recently witnessed two "pedantic plods" [in a plod car] walking along a long line of motorcycles with their "measuring gear" [which consisdts of two peices of card, one card has a hole which the whole plate must fit,and the other measures the size of the letters].
The plod car was being slowly driven along the road by one plod [holding up following traffic] whilst the 2nd plod walked along a long line of maybe 200 'bikes with his measuring cards.
Any plate not fitting the above criteria was penalised.

IIRC [and I could be wrong here :? ] .....its a £60 fine non endorsable offence .....although the DVLC have the right to "confiscate" the "cherished/personal" number of consistant offenders.

btw .... this happened in Matlock Bath one summer Sunday [for the benefit of anyone who is familiar with Matlock being a bit of a 'bikers "Mecca" on sundays] ........ And I'm neither condemning or condoning the actions of the 'bikers or plods,I'm merely commenting what I've seen done.

Its amazing what people say when they see number plates on my cars  .
"Oh,its a French car, where did you get it,France?" and"How do you manage to keep the original French number plates on your car?" and"Do the police stop you?".
Well,no,in 2 years I have never been stopped, and they are British number plates that have French stylee

I've had exactly the same experiences, most people don't see beyond the blue euro F! No probs with plod so far either, hopefully they've got better things to do (ie: catching REAL criminals lol). At MOT time, I simply refit my original plates.

Got my French style ones here:

and I think it was you Dave 411 who sent me the link origially, for which I'm grateful.

Terry...I wonder they had the time to do this, mind if some one of rank ordered them then they would have no choice. Me I found car drivers the worst offenders ( maybe being a biker on both sides of the fence made a difference :-) ) But often as not there were more serious matters would come to light.

Chris this is the way round the MOT problem and as I said I doubt most police wouldn't even notice, lets face it it's the idiots in super lowered cars hand brake turning on carparks and street racing are the ones police are more interested in and they often have illegal plates 'status quo' me thinks :-)

You should certainly only have black and silver plates where you're legally entitled to them, which is basically on vehicles manufactured before 1st Jan 1973. As for why you wouldn't want ANPR cameras to pick you up ... well, just because I don't see why anyone should know where I am and what I'm doing all the time. I've got nothing to hide but I resent being monitored wherever I go.

Just to point out if you went down the 'a1showplates' route, the later white/yellow plates will not be legal anyway. I bought some from them with a made up number on just for shows (and to add to our growing collection of old plates), they looked legal enough, with correct spacing/font, but as an off duty plod pointed out at a kit-car show they dont reflect anywhere as near as much as they should. Having said that if your going down the Ali pressed plate look then it doesn't apply to you, but for others; make sure they are not show plates!
