Re: Shaggable old cars (and bikes)
Architect LeCorbussier's concept for an ultra-minimal car. Looks strangely familiar!

I had a BSA Subeam back in 1966 only because my mother wouldn't let me have a bike, It was quicker and sounded better than the Vespa's and Lambetta's of the day,but so bloody unreliable, who in there right mind would put the silencer right behing the rear wheel,so it collected all the road muck and rain,so rots before your eyes? Then there was the worst designed clutch release ever, simply an unlubricted sytem that had the nasty habit of friction welding itself together, snapping the pushrod and enging the clutch all good fun 'not'. My engineering dad made up phosphurbronze parts to try to stop this, they lasted longer but still caused problems, I was'nt sorry to see it sold Yes i briefly had one about 12 years ago, a mate and myself modified the cooling with some extra alu plate and we dropped the exhaust down under the left footboard into an old small welding gas bottle as an exit pipe. It sounded great ,like a beetle, and went really well 70 mph easily but yes a very high maintenance machine and even with those modifications i still couldnt get much more than 40 miles without it needing to cool down. On the contrary a vespa is much more simple and reliable, you can thrash it all day and maintenance and problems are minimal, like a 2cv.. I'm not sure about the death trap comment, it handled and braked quite well although got quite wallowy in summer with the grease filled front suspension My dads parents were the same, you can't have a bike but you can have a scooter He had a bsa sunbeam too but the 175 2 stroke single, and then a Lambretta LD ,slower but much more practical he said.
