 No, no progress at all, have not done anything with the megasquirt, or put the new gearbox in. Been too busy with proper work, so shouldn't really complain in these times.

Ok, I have to accept that it's always possible to make time if you want to do something, but I've been avoiding changing the gearbox because it's such a pain in the arse. Anyway I pulled my finger out and made a start.

:?: So I have a question, does anyone know about this thing, the screw with the locknut on the back casing.

Image

It seems to be an adjustable stop for the reverse gear selector rod, but I'm wondering how precisely set it needs to be. Is it only set when the box is manufactured, or might it need adjusting throughout the life of the car, I couldn't find any mention of it in the manual.

What I'm wondering is, can I remove it and replace it with a grub screw held in with loctite? And how accurately would I need to set it, 1/4 mm alright? If I can I'll gain an extra 18mm clearance to the bulkhead.

Meh, I'm sure it's fine. I checked it's length and then replaced it with a grub screw.

Okay, this isn't only from Lpgo reminding me, the boss is away this week so he can't complain that the 2cv is spread all over the workshop.

Have pictures, you'll get the idea,

An engine crane would be simpler, but it's a lot better than nothing, Image

The bulkhead needed a bit more 'relieving' courtesy of the big mallet, but I'm very glad not to be welding it. Sorry, didn't realise how crap this photo was 'til I posted it. The 'tail' of the 'box actually fits very nicely between the axle and bulkhead seam.
Image

And have a gratuitous engine and box shot, just because I love how well they fit together. The guys at bmw even made sure to leave enough room for the clutch arm.
Image

I've had to unbolt the front axle to cut the old mounting off, I repeatedly cursed whoever decided the rear brake pipe should sit in front of the axle. And yeah, I'm a lucky git having this workshop. But I've only got it to myself 'til tuesday.

Tomorrow morning I'll be going to get some steel to make up some new mounts, the rubbers have been sat here waiting since last winter.

Turns out none of the steel places in town are open saturday morning, arse, so I had to go and scrounge some from a friend instead.
Made a reasonable start on the mounts, the rubbers are transit shock rubbers. The long nuts will be welded to the brackets on the axle.

Spent about 12 hours in the workshop today, and made some reasonable progress. Made the brackets that go on the axle, awkward place to get to and tack them on.

Image

Took the axle off for the second time to weld them on properly. Weldy weldy, luverly jubberly.

Image

Then with the axle painted and back in again, drop the engine in one more time to tack the gearbox brackets, then lift it out to remove the brackets and weld them up. Finally gave them a coat of paint before I came home. I do love me a bit of TIG.

Image

Tomorrow I've got to see if I can get it back together by lunchtime, it's going to be close. Never seams to make any difference how long I've got to do something, it's usually 95% finished when the time's up.

It's nice that you can have the gearbox sitting above the front cross member to get the engine weight back.

How much of an issue is that alternator sitting TDC... Can it be moved/reduced or is it not much of a clearance issue?

Would there be enough room to mount an electric fan in front of the oil cooler... or again is it not necessary?

Harley

PS. When will you be producing all these parts for others to do this mod! 8-)
