I think I might have said this when you first mentioned it, Sam, but you'll need to develop a thick skin and be prepared to put in a lot of effort which you'll never be thanked for. It will seem like nobody appreciates what you do or are trying to do. I tend to give up and walk away from things when it gets like that but I suspect you have a stronger will than myself.

Sam,

Some fairly random points about this that may be utterly stupid, but after my original post thought a few recent thoughts might make this even more complicated

1) I hate things that are numbered
B) The magazine is surely just that! A magazine that is a physical thing posted through peoples door each month. I appreciate that seeking feedback from I2F forum is interesting as is any thoughts on the 2CVGB forum maybe, but there is a vast number of people that dont use the computer at all. It isn't an age thing, I was genuinly suprised when at Salbris to chat to so many people who didnt log into 2CV forums at all, yep some young folk too. I am not sure using the magazine to get people onto forums is what you are after, but the communication is in different formats and some folk use all or little of them. I think the magazine should stand up in its own right and be of its own identity. There is (lets be honest) a different "flavour" between I2F and 2CVGB forum, let the magazine find its own feet also. Give us another new thing.
7) Many people also communicate by the dreaded facebook too...(even I occasionally)...I suspect when the magazine was set up it was very different....but again it is an amazing chance to communicate and my concern is that we can read something here in this place, log into 2CVGB forum and read the same thing there, maybe even on facebook....would rather not have the same stuff again a month later in a magazine...so maybe aim in a different direction...and one of your choice.
3) There are many things you could or could not include, you will be hung drawn and quartered for getting it wrong anyway, so just be strong and brave and do it how you want to.
7) I am always interested in any technical stuff because I like to do my own work if I can. I dont care if the experts dont agree on things, I make my mind up and will try all of them to solve a problem. I like to learn from things I read and appreciate anyone writing articles that give me a chance or encouragement to have a go at a job myself. I hope like here that those who are knowledgable will share things to us that can benefit from that.
£) One problem is that (like the forums) only a few people will contribute...many will subscribe and either not be interested or sit in the background and moan if they dont like it...a fact of life you will, I hope not take personally. It is a shame that 2CVGB (via the mag and forum) and probably here has more people who dont contribute. They become "members" and dont get involved.....I try my best on here, but have limited technical knowledge....have tried and will try again on 2CVGB forum, but "green ink" jokes aside...OK I will support you and write you some articles...I hope others do too. The silent minority/majority syndrome.
11) I know its a bit of a drift, but credit to Anna for the 2CVGB website at the moment. I have a poor record of 2CVGB membership and yet think the new site is looking great. I dont know Anna, have never met her (although exchanged a few messages), but I would like to say I do like the website. I have recently tried to become active there again and find myself not as happy as I should be. Its not a site design problem, but just a few of the people there seem to make me ....err...what is the word ?....unlike here. Sorry...the point is forums and web sites are still only one thing....the magazine is not so imediate. It is one thing to "Moderate" a forum, often after a thread or comment has been made, but very much different to be planning a magazine in advance. Forums are generally quite live and things go off on a tangent and also people fall out in different ways. A magazine can be similar, but the pace is slower and by default you will have accepted the contents of each publication in advance. Above all people cant just make comments because they need to say something to have the highest number of posts....that is the problem of certain forums.
69) Can I now insert the word BUM now for no other reason than I think we can use that word here and when I submit an article to you as Editor of 2CVGB magazine I will have to disguise it, within what I say....so for no reason at all.... BUM (I was going to say WANK...and several other things....but ...just feel like swearing for the fuck of it)....ha...!!!
598) Will you consider including articles only about 2CVs....not Dyanes, Amis and all that other stuff ...Brake drum/disks, headlight shape and even D*lly owners could be accomodated....but 2CVs only please ;)
12) I am reserved about 2CVGB, I have read elswhere about arguments for and against joining, but I was very swayed by (spanners?) saying about the historic vehicle side of stuff...ultimatly we can debate stuff as much as we want but if driving our cars becomes illegal as it is in some european cities by poloticians...I will support anything anyway I can to stop that. I cant follow too much 2CVGB "bashing" on other terms as I have met the current membership sec a few times....I dont envy that job at all....2CVGB is run by people who give up their own time for nowt. However.....so is this place...the "management/owners" of this site pay for this web space and I feel lucky to also log in here for nowt. The magazine, as are the forums all great sources of communication, information and above all community.
13) You could print blank pages and then people could write their own magazine when it arrives.....might save a load of hassle and then everyone would be happy
14) There is no 14
15) Advertising in 2CVGB is a goldmine. I know that as once I did so myself ( in my dark days as an insurance broker). It is a captive audience and a specialist market in the UK. I am not aware of current costs etc, not interested in who is where, but there is a market here to have a few "freebies", discounts and at least a rude calender sponsered by them all at the end of the year! Get them to sponser a free gift occasionally.
22) Can I suggest Caitlin as the first page three girl ? I think the "readers wives" page should at least start with the new editors girlfriend.
15a) Above all you can only edit what people send in to you. The magazine isnt for you to write, if people dont contribute then you cant edit it. If you get boring articles, you can edit them or just send us a loo roll to use....best of luck Sam....I hope you get 99% of good contributions.....if I can offer you at least 1% of total utter junk and others are prepared to do the same then it should be asy for you.

'box

Sorry...will shut up now....

Had my induction last night. I have a LOT to do!

If anyone would like anything published in my first attempt, please get it to me asap! Rebel 2cv has promised me another edition of Yoof Perspective. George - get me some pictires of the 'how to rat' you promised me!

Squeeze - wow, some truly great suggestions. Blank pages had actually occured to me. It won't regurgitate content, don't worry. I'm very keen for the mag to develop its own voice. (not MY voice I hasten to add). And for this voice to be used in other media too.

The number of contributions seems to be on the rise luckily! I want to keep it that way.

Er, as above really. So yay! But eek!

Why am I posting this here instead of on 2cvGB? Well, because they're all members and get the magazine anyway. I appreciate there's a lot of non-members here, so what could I do to make you join up so you could get that magazine - it should be a highlight of membership, not a freebie surely!

So i2F what magazine content would you like to see that could tempt you to join 2cvGB?

Well got to my first 100 post mark ... so "now firing on two"!
and have just been issued a membership number for 2CVGB (still awaiting info in the post)
But if you want any images for the web site or magazine would be happy to help

A while ago, I was looking at a mag that had a 'reader's technical questions' section in it, which had one question and a response from 3 of 2CVGB's generally acknowledged 'technical gurus' (i.e. Ken Hanna, Pete Abbott and I forget the third - possibly Rick Pembro), each giving a slightly different perspective/insight. I thought that was a great format, and get's round the "you don't want to do it like *that*!" arguments.

Yeah - I don't know what happened to that, Anna (Mike Phelan was the third, btw) - the questions just stopped arriving one day...

There was a phase where technical tips were phased out of the mag because of the fear of being sued if some muppet did something stupid and came after the Club. I don't know how apposite that argument ever was, or still is, but something to bear in mind, Sam.

It was indeed an anxiety which was pointed out to member clubs by the FBHVC, in something like 1994, and is probably just as apposite today, but they were never phased out exactly. The trick was to couch things in terms of 'how I did so-and-so', or else write stuff that was fully accurate and safe.

[BTW, I'm also in the process of trying to complete an index of technical articles that have appeared in the mag over the years. This used to appear annually in the mag, but somehow got dropped (after, Bev, I think). The first pass will be the index itself, but eventually I'm hoping to get PDFs of the relevant articles for people to reference. I'm a bit dependent on members with an archive of mags to get this finished, though. Slow progress, and it's been on the backburner recently, but it's not forgotten - honest!]

Would be great to see that re-appear - a definitive reference, for those who have the relevant copies, anyhow - Bev and I did compile a list at the end of every year, and it was always surprising how much there was, despite the received opinion.. Some of it was thundering good as well. The downside was the way some of the advice was received: Roy sent in some superb articles under the nom de plume of 'Technically Correct', and got called an idiot for his trouble... Of course, all the pieces had to be written by members of the Bev Abbott Fan Club - quite right too, and as it fucking should be. ;)
