Ok, sorry if this has been asked before, I did a search and couldn't find the answers I was after, so here goes.

I need a chassis.

My options are, Ecas, Kens, or 2CV City.

If money was no object, I would have one of Kens. BUT, money is an object and the 2CV City one is £200 cheaper. I'm aware that they are said to be a bit "dodgy", but in what way? They come with a 10 year guarantee so I can't see them being too bad.. surely?

Does anyone have one? Experiences of fitting or living with one, good or bad?

2cv City ones crack at the front kick up and the shock absorber mounts aren't up to much. Having said that mine's on one and I've not had any problems, even the shock absorbers haven't come loose (yet) and I'm sure there's loads of other people that have them and haven't had problems. There's a proper good thread somewhere that gives good and bad experiences of different chassis', but can't seem to find it? Anyone know the one I mean?

So almost sounds like I could just run some beast-like welds around those areas and be ok? I know it's galvanised, but I could weld it outside wearing an air fed mask.. Worth it to save £200!

Check the small print on the guarantee as well. On many products it's more of a marketing tool than anything to rely on.

That's a slight sweeping statement James. I know of 3 old 2cv city chassis that have done that. And both you car and mine are on 2cv city chassis!

I have had the shock absorber bolt problem, whereby the bolt holding the shock in place snaps. That's happened twice! But I've replaced the bolts and it's been fine since.

I feel like a stuck record player, I reel this off in every chassis related thread. Dollys done 30,000 miles on a 2cv city chassis, been rear ended on that chassis, pulled a 14ft boat, etc... No issues.

My only gripe is that the front towing eye sticks down instead of sideways like an original chassis and cos mines low at the front it graunches on speed bumps.

I didn't choose a 2cv city chassis, it was cheap and I knew no better at the time.

For a cheapo non rusting rebuild I'd do the same again. How short is the money?!

If I was 'investing' in my car, going off roading, or just had the money to spend I'd choose SLC. Because Kens really nice

I'd go ECAS or ken, just cause neither have had a bad word said against them (as yet) and a city one has, it unlikely that you'd have a problem, but a bigger chance of it with a city one. I got a frome one had one shocker mount go. I'm expecting the other front to go soon, given the ride height. I believe citys have similar problems, not sure though

but ive never heard a bad word about ken, someone was telling me about a raid chassis he had built and how excellent it was,

over the weekend at the camp more than one person ended up talking about the young chap, im honestly not a salesmen of kens, but from what i hear he knows alot more than average joe about structual stuff, so after hearing lots of positives and not a negative id choose an SLC....

hi Peter,I have a spesh on what I think is a 2cv city chassis,and am in the middle of fitting an early wheels galv chassis to a D*lly.Both chassis are flimsy looking when compared to one of Kens.
Do yourself a favour,get an SLC,they are bullet proof.
By the way,there is nothing wrong with my two,but if I was going to buy another chassis,having seen Kens,that is the way I would go.

Wait until you drive the van on the road. It'll be a revelation. Surely you can tell the difference when driving the Mehari? I swore I couldn't tell once, but the difference between my Frome car and the proper citroen one is vast.
