 2CV rear axle stub nuts

last couple i did the threads on the stub chewed, perhaps relieving the staking leaves a "cutting edge" that messes the thread?

any problems with stub thread you non relievers?

I never open the locked nut. Using a chisel or any other tool can make more damage to the thread. OK I have the luxury of this die to clean the thread if needed.

The "smoke wrench" (cutting torch) did the job! must be the skilled operator ha ha . Those nuts were TIGHT and the staking bashed into the axle slot. I don`t think there was any other way to get them off. Both nuts destroyed but everything else OK. Thanks for all of your posts!! paul

I've not had any issues with the threads, it's never needed anything more than an occasional quick tickle with a thread file to get the nut started.

same again, with the need for a thread file being a very rare occurrence, once a decade perhaps... :lol:

@ Sean,
consider how easily the similar, but smaller scale, staked nuts in the rear of a gearbox can be undone.
That's if they haven't undone all by themselves before the gearbox is opened. :roll:
Any small amount of deformation caused by the staking being pushed back out is cleared as the nut is unwound, I reckon.

What a Great Forum! Please save me some time----What is the CORRECT TPI or thread flie (metric) to dress-up the axle treads? Us Americans always have a hassel to convert--I`m not sure something "close" works---I have nothing metric to do this but will find it to do this job. Thanks for the input---Paul

The files have eight flats, so eight different sets of teeth. I can't for the life of me remember which is applicable to the stub axle. One file covers most eventualities.

It is a useful tool to have, they're great for dressing the end of a bolt if you've cut one down to length. Both a metric and imperial file lurk in the top drawer of my tool box.

I just use this, to get the rear drums off. Have always worked for me, but maybe I haven't met the really stubborn ones yet:

I've had a look in the workshop manual, and it seems as these should only be tightened with 35-40 Nm,greased threads.
