is that one of the engines with a cam belt?

whats the cam timing like?

all the elements seem to be there , fuel, compression, spark just seems to be all happening at the wrong point.

Haynes Manual 290 explains the cam belt timing and setting up/checking in OK easy to follow detail.

It involves counting teeth so make sure you have good light, patience and time!

once it fires you will love it!

Yes Sean has the twin cam belt set up!
And Yes I think it must be something to do with timing although before I had the Cheap clutch rubbing problem, we got it started and it ran fine apart from the loud screachy noise from rubbing pressure plate, the only thing that has been removed, repaired and replaced is the distributor..!!!!

Might give that a go Tim although I think that was fine....If the replacement distributor doesn't work then it will have to get stripped down again!!!!

It does sound infuriating Matt, and if I was just down the road I would offer to come and help, but unfortunately I'm not.

At least you've found something that's not right, it's better than everything seeming to work, but it still won't run. Is it points or leccy ignition?

1. does your rotor turn?
when it turns goto 2
when it doesn't turn, why does'nt it turn, take your valvecover off look if the valves open and closes while turning the engine, when they don't open and close you'e in deep shit......... (timing belt is not good, broken )

2. when your roter turns put a spark directly to your coil and see if it sparks
twice every engine rpm. when it sparks ther is something wrong with your rotor/distributor cap.

3. Do you have 12 volt going to 1 side of your coil?
(if you don't make 1 directly from your battery +)
make your - clamp loose so you can take it on and off as a switch (for the moment)

4. does your breaker work (making contact, loosing contact) 2 times on 1 rpm
(take a light 12 volt/multimeter one side to the battery + other side to the breaker,
when the breaker makes contact, the light has to shine when the breaker disconnect it has to go out.

Try to do these things, try to see what is happening, what should happening
and so on...

Test your coil; is it working properly and so on..........

Thats what is was like last week Joolz, everything seems to work but wouldn't start!!!!...

Now something doesn't work, and can't seem to pin point the problem as nothing was touched..................................Yes its leccy ignition, just got another ignition module thing on order, should be hear 2moro, i'll give it another go end of the week c if that works!!!!!!...
Will get the multimeter out and see whats going on power wise at the same time...

Cheers James, its not just an A series though, but 3 cars molded into one, built over 10 years ago, sat in a couple of peoples gardens for many years then I stripped it almost completely down..... you just expect problems, just wish there wasn't as many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheer Ipgo..

""""3. Do you have 12 volt going to 1 side of your coil?

That did the trick.....Wire direct from battery and the beast fired into life... :o :D :o :D
And jesus what a noise, suppose I better put the side exhaust piece on... Sounded like a drag car!!!

so.. now I can get on with other jobs like bleeding the brakes, getting the seats sorted and a few other things, and then hopefully its ready to hit the road.....
