I would have thought it might have got a bit exciting when he connected the battery charger (unless it was fused, which I imagine it was) - I know what would happen if you connected two batteries in series..! It is probably possible to connect a battery in a car back to front if you forced the negative terminal on hard enough...

 Re: Battery question
Adrian, sounds OK in theory, but in practice a 2CV starter pulls 150 amps on 'normal' starting, rising to 280 amps at stall. Found some guff in a Toyota service document which mentions 130 amps for their starter, so perhaps it's to do with the gearing 'twixt starter and engine. Some of the racers have come unstuck during the 24 hour by using a motorcycle battery, which is fine for a 10 lap sprint race but won't have enough in reserve if the racer is reluctant to start after a pit stop... ken toomany2cvs wrote: Although, given how small a 2cv starter & engine are, I'd expect anything but the weediest of small-motorbike batteries to cope quite happily. It's not as if it's a chuffin' gurt big diesel 4x4 or truck...
(C)CA = (Cold) Cranking Amps = How many amps the battery can deliver at once. Going back to that water tank analogy, how big the outlet hole is. The starter will only "take" as much as it "needs".

The replacement was a reduction-geared one, and - by crikey, it flew. It totally removed that characteristic CX churn-churn-churn sound, though...

 Re: Battery question
Reversing polarity was a new one to me, too. In fact I left my neighb saying the garage were trying to pull a fast one, and I'd find out the 'truth'... After a bit of investigation, I gave him the bad news . With most batteries - especially 'dry' cells - the voltage is generated by using two different materials for the electrodes. In a wet cell like a car battery, however, both electrodes are lead (or whatever they use these days - is it still lead?) What then happens is that one electrode becomes coated with an oxide (or similar) due to the charging process, and this is what gives the battery its leccy-producing potential - the electrodes are now effectively different . My neighb's battery was COMPLETELY flat, or else it would - as peeps suggest above - have sparked alarmingly when connected to the charger t'wrong way round - or would at least have blown/tripped a fuse. But a dead-flat battery did none of this. Ah well, you learn sommat new every day.
