Well after a couple of hours trying to shift 4 corroded bolts, I discovered a very perished and split piece of rubber that looked original joining the tank to the main pipe, a quick replacement and clean up under the tank, all put back together and we have a working car again. Just had to blast up and down the A20 just to make sure and got a bit worried when I stopped for fuel as it wouldnt restart, one of the leads had worked loose, it now runs like a dream. So thanks to all of you who identified the culprit

That bit of pipe is a proper ballache. If you have an old 2cv or an ami they have a dead handy hole under the rear seat you can get at that through without dropping the tank. I meant to cut one into my car when the shell was off but like many things I intend to do it never happened...

Yes, that pipe is a pain in the *** . I just got three 2cv-s with the same problem . They are parked on my front-yard and waiting for Monday morning...
