 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
[quote="Old-Nail"] Interesting Thread this is ! But I wonder : Why do you have "Eng"on your licence plate in stead of GB? And the Red Cross in stead of the Union Jack ? Good old times sake?

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
England is still england and represented by the flag of St George .Scotland and Wales even have their own parliament now (curiously the last PM who was Scottish didn't give one to England). Otherwise the football team would be called GB or UK or something

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
Each individual country of "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" is a separate entity within the "UK", but the main government is based in London (as most things are) and is known as the British Government, at home and abroad. There is an international agreement that "GB" is the identifying "tag" for British vehicles. As a consequence of that, all British vehicles abroad have to display "GB" on them, to identify them to local law enforcement officials (police).
We can also have ENG for England, WAL or CYM for Wales, SCO for Scotland and NI for Northern Ireland, each with their own flag fitted on our number/licence plates, but when we take that vehicle abroad we must have a GB sticker on the boot-lid. If we have GB on the plates with the EU flag, we don't need a separate GB sticker on the vehicle.

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
Geert, in this amalgamation of lands that they jokingly refer to as the 'United Kingdom' we are anything but united. Each individual nation is still proud of its heritage, the only difference is that the English have now been brow beaten into seeing themselves as historically evil, and are given a guilt trip so as to be ashamed of their national flag. The Scots and Welsh on the other hand, are generally more apt to place the Saltaire or Dragon on their cars with pride. If I could have chosen where I was born then I would much rather have been German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, or even French, because to me all of those nations are more true to themselves and to their traditions than we are. Unfortunately I was born in England. As mentioned, the other nations that make up the UK are not shy at making it clear that they are not English, and I for my part in return want to make it just as clear that I am not 'British', or 'European'. I chose the English flag for my plate over the European ring of stars, or 'GB' for the following reasons. I see the EU as an unelected body, and I abhor many of it's laws and decisions. I therefore think that England (or Britain) would be better of out of it, but we are not given a referendum or choice in this because the politicians know the result would be just that. When you have laws forced upon you from an unelected central power, which also drains your country of money to fund itself, then I see that as being nothing more than the modern replacement for the Soviet system. I chose the cross over 'GB' because GB is a misnomer - Britain is not 'Great' anymore, and it hasn't been since the 1950's. Let's stop kidding ourselves. I therefore chose the St. George flag to say 'Up yours' to all European federalist ideas, to the increasingly politically correct ruling classes at home, and to my next door neighbour who is 'proud to be Scottish'. See? All that thought has gone into one little detail that most don't even notice. Little Louis wrote: over 35's is probably a few years older than what james is aiming at Well my advice when going for the 16 - 25 year old bracket for women is as follows. (perhaps I should start an agony column? ) I don't normally advocate colour prejudice, but where women of between 16 - 25 are concerned I have a grave warning that must be observed if you are not to be left heartbroken. James - Stay Away from Orange women! In my experience of the Orange ones, while superficially attractive, consist of nothing more than an exterior made from various chemicals, and an interior of bubbles. There! You just don't get good advice like this in Mens health or Maxim magazine do yer?

 Re: My old Blue Bamboo
I'm not for one minute suggesting you're unaware of this fact, Old-Nail, but just in case there are some folk out there (especially from other countries) who are unware, I'll just add this :- The British isles are an archipelago of over 1000 islands. There is the island of Ireland, the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, the Isle of Man, the Inner Hebrides and Outer Hebrides, Orkney Isles and of course, the Shetland Isles. But the main island of the British isles is Great Britain, which has the majority of the land of England, Scotland and Wales. Below is a piece from Wikipedia:- All of the island is territory of the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and most of the United Kingdom's territory is in Great Britain. Most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island of Great Britain, as are their respective capital cities: London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_BritainPS:- I'll just add, it's good to have you back, it helps to give this forum a "pub" feel.

You can't have a relationship where only one is wanting it. Johnathon, you said archipelago, In all the posts I've done I'd never have thought I could fit such a word in - well done! I'm going to try and add a similarly under-used word in my next few posts just to see if I can.

Well, if you're talking about under-used words, the UK and the EU then we could do worse than to mention the word "subsidiarity". There, I've done it! Plenty of orange women in my area. Known collectively in our house as the "Orange Order", not in reference to anything political but simply to signal how depressingly conformist and shallow people are these days...
