 Mr Nail ...... its your fundemental human right to become a grumpy old sod as you get older .....all this Mr Niceguy is wasted on most folk anyway these days.
I got a sarcastic "Push past, why dont you?" in the local supermarket this week ... :| ....[despite the fact that I'd said " 'Scuse me" twice :| ]
The "lady" who said it got a "Dont worry missis,I just f***ing have done" back ....

It is indeed. I was brought up to always use good manners Terry, and in that respect I'm stuck with them.
I'm quite old fashioned really, I do all the things like opening of doors for people, the polite 'after you', and so on, which makes it doubly infuriating when others are ignorant toward me. If a nowty old bastard like me can make the effort then in my book so should they.

Beer and music? No, not really. They pay to get in so they can get at all the half dressed local totty that they have been drooling over all night. But sometimes they are left like something out of a Shirley Bassey song...'with their nose pressed up against the window pane'.

After yesterdays marathon shopping trip I stayed up late last night (albeit drinking beer and watching TV- what a chauvinist!) while the Mrs fussed over and wrapped various strange shaped objects. I saw through the window that it was snowing quite hard and that was at around 2 am, so I knew things would be interesting today.

You see just as yesterday was 'buy and wrap everything' day, today was 'deliver it all, thank you - and good night' day.

The key I find, to having a perfectly grumpy and anti-social Christmas, is to get all the pleasantries over with early, stock up well with food and drink, then lock the door and humbug it 'till new year. I can now confirm that apart from a short trip out on Christmas eve it's all been done, and so I can shut the door, so woe betide any carol singers!

I usually carry a small camera around in my pocket for any eventuality so there's never a shortage of pictures when I'm out and about, but today has been another busy one so the only ones I got to take were the one drawing out of the garage this morning and two on my return.

The snow is around a foot or so deep I'd say, and most of the roads (including the main roads) haven't been cleared, yet some of the driving I've seen today was beyond belief...where do they find these people? Needless to say the 2cv got anywhere and everywhere we needed to be, it surprised a few timid 4x4 drivers, and finally brought us safely back to Old-Nail towers in one piece.

Image

Another long day was had by all, but once again the car performed faultlessly. During my stint as Santa I have driven over snow covered pavements, grass verges, and in one instance over a road that I was warned was so deep as to be 'impassable'.

I wouldn't mind betting that there are one or two conversations over dinner tonight that begin with "You'll never believe what I saw today..." Now if you'll excuse me I think I just heard a cork popping... ;)

i just laugh and carry on as there stuck!!

i find also that i am far to nice to people, i always open doors for people, and let them through first, even when they try to let me through first
i will always help people where i can, i recently gave £2 to charity, i had a bunch of coppers, and as i looked the old bloke all sad with his parksinsons bucket i gave the £2 and felt good about myself.

James of all the people that I meet when out and about, the two sets that I enjoy speaking to the most are the very young and the very old.
I enjoy speaking with young people because every now and again hidden amongst the many childish ego's and X factor wannabee's, is someone like yourself or Little Louis with a bit of genuine individuality.

Such young people are usually interesting, polite, and mature for their years. I find that the good manners they display actually comes across as an indicator of intelligence, as those who don't use a 'please' and 'thank you' are often simply too thick to know they are supposed to. There's a shop checkout girl near me for example, that just holds out her hand and says "four pound'or whatever, and the lack of a 'Please' is quite deafening.

That's a very nice gesture mate, but don't confuse kindness with stupidity. Don't give anyone your card and pin number how ever cute they might be (I'm guessing she wasn't fat and ugly right?) ;)

I'm pleased to know that you have a decent streak in you James, always keep it, and use good manners wherever possible. That will enable you to mix in any company, and in doing so to rise above your peers, who will probably just end up on the checkout in my local Spar after their X factor/footballers wife dreams have been shattered.

Post Re: My old Blue Bamboo
thanks nail :)

well i hadnt given her my pin as she refused but you get the point

i recently split up with my mrs, sad times and still very sad by it, and her mum said to her, "james is perfect husband material, hes too perfect almost, if only you found him 10 years later to marry him"
the mrs wanted to sort of enjoy her teenage life while she can and have fun which is fair enough!!

time for mr mean bastard ;)

i find (and this is not meant in an offensive way to anyone) that the better looking birds are the uglier ones on the inside, and the better looking they are on the inside the worse they are on the outside

the world has changed alot, sorry to go on a rant and none of which was to offend anyone so dont take it the wrong way!

Post Re: My old Blue Bamboo
I think that you are spot on with your observations James. My 'fat and ugly' comment was a flippant one I know, but unfortunately given the way our society is today it's likely to be true nonetheless. Having said that you can't go round being 'nice' to people all the time, not unless you're a social worker.

I've met literally tens of thousands of pretty women over the years, and in general the 'stunners' were well up their own backsides, and of little intellectual or moral quality. On the whole they were just looking for a footballer/millionaire to marry. The one area of exception to this rule was in the classical music field, where the Cellist, flautists and others that I encountered were beautiful, intelligent and talented.

Also don't worry so much as you do about offending anyone James. There will always be those that take offence, hell, there are some folks out there that take offence at my drawing my next breath - there always will be. I accept it, and I accept that the things I say are not to everyone's taste, and then I say them anyway - because:

A; I believe what I'm saying to be true, as my opinions were formed over time, mostly from personal experience and close observation, and not in a classroom or from a newspaper.

B; I don't find the tut-tutting condescension I often hear from certain quarters to be a valid form of expressing an alternative view to my own. I'm always up for a debate! :D

Being 'inoffensive' is like being invisible, it may make other peoples lives easier for them if you were, but it will make yours harder and more frustrating for you - So don't do it! Always be polite, but be who you are, and those that like you (including the women) will be attracted to you, and those that don't like you will divide themselves into little sub groups for comfort, but that won't matter to you one bit.

I'll end this sermon with a Hymn, and just to prove that I'm not made of stone I'll admit that each time I hear this piece of music it provokes tears to run down my face. I've absolutely no idea why, but they do come despite my attempts to remain oblivious to the beauty of the music. Now if anyone can tell me why a hardened, scarred and cynical man can cry at this I'd love to know! It also serves to support my observations on female musicians. ;)

Sorry to intrude on your thread, Old Nail, but I think (hope) it might be relevant to what you are saying to James. James, mate, there are two ways you can go; stay the way you are (kind, thoughtful, not cussing every second word, showing us all that not every 'yoof' is a mindless hoody), or, well, let them pull you down to their level - and you will become as them.

Keep on being polite. Always. Expect it also of others too, but don't be disappointed when they aren't ('cos you will often be disappointed.) Just smile to yourself when they aren't and know that you are better than them. (Actually, try the 'bemused-smile-with-raised-eyebrow' combination at them too - it really pi$$es them off, and everyone else who notices knows exactly what you are thinking.)

And, referring to O-N's earlier post, the same applies to the twits who cuss and rant in their cars. I remember well when I made the transition from cussing and gesticulating back (which only leaves you angry and fuming even after the other party is many, many miles away...) to the very-visible 'laugh' (you might not actually be laughing out aloud, but the other twit thinks you are). Watching an already red-faced moron become an exploding, sputtering, vein-popping imbecile from the comfort of your own car is embarrassingly pleasurable.
