Harley,
that's a slightly different problem, caused by the rear nut on the mainshaft working loose.
That nut has the drive gear for the speedo incorporated into it and should be torqued at 60 ft.lbs, the same as the nut on the pinion shaft.
In about 90% of the gearboxes I work on, both of those nuts have worked loose and are barely finger tight.
Prevention is better than a cure, as is Loctite for securing the nuts rather than the original method... ;)

Doesn't a ticking mean the rear Gearbox bearing could be failing?
Mine did b4 it locked up in peak-hour and rammed the rod through the rear housing... I though it was well rooted but my 2cv man fixed it all with engine and gearbox still in car;)

was a ticking with an occasional fluter/bounce which i just thought was character...

Harley

My speedo cable keeps falling out of its locator on the back of the speedo. The threaded part stays in place, but the inner slips down from its locator, and then can be heard rattling around when the car's moving. I've put it back a few times, but it's always fallen out again after a few miles. Any suggestions? Ta.

I've got a slightly different problem (my whole car is a problem these days) fitted a mph speedo in my van about a year ago, now it's apparently not done a single mile for about a year now!

Jono,
didn't Old-Nail have this problem with a new (best price) speedo cable?

On closer investigation, the cable turned out to be a Peugeot item, iirc... ;)

Post Re: speedo file
slightly off topic,
but i had an issue with the speedo cable on my motorbike, i decided to go off roading through a bumpy field on it, (bearing in mind it was a sports bike not a cross ir scrambler!!) and the cable smapped in 3 places!!
the speedo used to not be able to keep up with the speed i was doing when accelarating!!

incidently my speedo rattles at about 35 occasionally, the needle does too, but never really cared!!

Indeed I did, and it's still unhooked as I've yet to get around to changing it. According to Roy at the time there was a batch of them made up slightly too small at the core, which allowed them to rotate rather than turn the speedo drive. That being so it would appear that whatever the price the supplier was the same. ;)

Assuming the inner cable end is a square shape as most are, would a simple solution be to bash it slightly so's to make it more diamond - at least two corners would engage?

Or, use a sharp cold chisel to lightly 'V' the middle of each side face of the which should make them expand away from each other a wee bit - so all four corners would engage?

Ta. The funny thing with it, is that it was ok for about 6000 miles post-rebuild. It's an old cable btw. I'll probably just put another one on at some point.
