Post Re: Periodic dramatic loss in power
its probably most important to drop the tank unless you know thats been done recently

James is right about the filter down on the chassis leg not necessarily to catch lumps but to keep water away from the pump as its moisture in the non return valves that seems to do them in

Most of the ones I've taken apart (including four from 80's 2cv's and Dyanes) have a metal or plastic gauze inside. I've only recently thrown away the one I changed on my 2cv at the last service so can't find one to strip down and photograph, but if I find another one to hand I'll certainly see whether that is the same. It's more of a debris trap than a true filter though due to the relatively coarse gauge of gauze used and is certainly nowhere near as fine a gauge as the one used on the fuel pick-up.

Fair enough, I'd be interested to see it though... ;)

I can definitely vouch for what a good job the one in the tank does though. I took my tank off in the summer, replaced the bit of perished pipe on top, and took the sender apart, soldering up the worn out 'wiper'. It was only after I'd put the tank back on, taken it off to reconnect the sender wire ( ), put it back on *again*, and sat down with a beer that I noticed the bloody filter sat on the table! It didn't get put back, and about two weeks later it started blocking the primary jet up once or twice a day. I've put an inline filter down on the chassis leg, which has stopped the jet blocking up, but has turned completely black in the 4 months it's been there. Think I need to put the filter back in the tank!

filter down by chassis leg, new flexi-fuel line and a quick blast out of the carb and it's running MUCH better. BUT it still seems to have an issue idling at traffic lights/junctions. Didn't get a chance to look at the pipe atop the petrol tank but I'll have a look next time I get a chance.

By the way what is the fuel pipe that runs along the chassis meant to be made of? I was expecting some sort of metal but it was clearish/white plastic.

Thanks Joolz. It looked like someone had put an inline filter in at some point and then decided to remove it and put a length of brass pipe in instead. Well that's what it looked like anyway.
