Pete, if you want to do a compression test (always interesting - although I doubt a worn engine is your problem here since it's intermittent) then (a) remove both spark plugs, (b) pull off one of the LT feeds to the ignition coil (not essential, but no point having sparks/shocks all over the place...), (c) screw the tester into one of the plug 'oles, (d) floor the throttle and crank the engine until the needle doesn't go up any higher - around 5 seconds ought to do it.

Take reading, repeat with other cylinder.

just a bit irrelevant,
ive been working more than usual recently with my friends on outboards,
weve had a load of the same outboards have similar problems (SIMILAR) and it was the float level, they where only 3.3hp outboards, and when you revved it died

anyway if its any help there you go!

Not quite right. You need two readings from each cylinder. One dry and one after you have squirted some oil into the cylinders. That's the way to determine if its valves or rings that are worn.

If the reading is good both times then all is OK.
If poor dry but good wet, then rings are the problem.
If poor dry and poor wet, then its valves.
