Never seen a convincing answer to this question. The first bit of a 2CV to rot is the bottom of the bulkhead, front floors and sills, followed by a few lower parts of the back of the car.

TBF, the back end of a "real" van rots _far_ worse than the back end of a saloon.

You can get a good 400 or Acad for half what it'd cost to build one of these sham-vans. I fail to see the point.

RHD, opening roof...

Haven't a couple of folk on 2CVGB hacked up decent 2cvs to make these things then fail to get them on the road for legal reasons?

They've had difficulties, sure, but I think they're past them now.

For people who can't weld it makes sense. It is far easier to do an assembly job bolting on a plastic bath tub on the back of a car than laboriously weld a van body back together. And if you have to pay someone to do it, quicker and cheaper.

I've had both an Acad and a 400. Personnally I can't live with an Acad, I just hate the way they look and it puts me in a bad mood whenever I see it. The 400 is marginally better but not much. I had an early Rico van and I actually surprised myself by quite liking it. They're nowhere near as bad as they're made out to be. For me though it is still a small ripple van or nothing.

I half agree, if you can't weld then gluing a pond liner to an otherwise perfect saloon shell is ideal, but who's going to cut up a saloon that doesn't need a screen surround floors and bulkhead? To build one of those plastic vans I reckon you're looking at £3000 minimum and that's assuming you started with a perfect saloon shell. My old mans selling a perfectly presentable 400 at the moment for £2000.

Fair enough if you want to build something plastic and fake, but that's why god gave us rusty ford sierras and jago jeeps isn't it?
