Interesting. So basically, I need to flush out the entire system - including the callipers - with white spirit once I've got the gearbox in and the brakes hooked up. Is that it?

Yes

Thanks for the advice folks, but I've decided to go with drums again, partly because Russ supplied a gearbox and lots of new drum brake stuff, and partly because I really can't be bothered trying to rig up a handbrake ... call me idle, and you'd be right. :)

Nothing wrong with drum brakes John if they are set up right.

That's the other reason I'm sticking with them ... :)

The drums on the bollocksed box were set up perfectly twice in my ownership, when I bought it and when I had it MOT'd in 2008. It's a cock off a job to do on an ami because to take the drums off you have to take the engine out (you don't have to, but it makes it so much easier!)

The thing is, Discs are rubbish in comparison with Drums, but seem to be easier to live with.

 It's ll about perspective really, once you have had a new drum pad de-laminate whilst winding down a steep coastal road discs look like a much better option.
I have a simple rule with cars and technology, if it's good enough for the F1 it's good enough for me

I'm pleased that I'll be able to do the new brakes on the bench (translation: in the garden) before fitting the new 'box. :)

The other nice thing about drums is that you have a purely mechanical link to your front brakes in the handbrake. Especially reassuring on a single circuit brake system ...

I should also apologise for not making enough time to put those brake bits on that other box.

Don't worry about it. I quite like doing stuff like that, wasn't having a dig or anything. :D

Yes

This has got me curious (from a science point of view). I'm tempted to fill some jam jars up with DOT5 and some old brake seals, some cleaned with white spirit, some uncleaned and some new, and see what happens. I'm assuming if you're right that the seals only suffer when there's a mix of DOT5 and LHM? but DOT5 on perfectly clean seals won't be a problem?
