 Honing Barrels Hi there, any advice on honing barrels? Is it essential with a ring change?

Re: Honing Barrels Well, I would have thought, yes. The bores will be shiny and the new rings will be unable to seal oil from passing by them without being given the chance to scrape themselves into the bores. Honing roughens the bore surface, necessitating a short running-in period but forcing the rings to cut their own pattern into them, which improves the seal between bore and ring, thus ensuring minimal oil consumption and a good compression seal that will last.

Re: Honing Barrels Cheers. I borrowed the honing tool off a local garage. I've put it all back together now and it's running very well, and isn't smoking anymore!

Re: Honing Barrels when i did the ami i test drove it to whitby in yorks... hills, motorway, lanes etc... seems ok now. fired up after 6 months fine and smoke free!

I am about to do top end re-build on my car....Russ...and others...is it best to thrash the bugger when done or go nice and slow for a while ? I thought running in was just that. ...or does it make a jott of difference ?
