Post Re: running in 2cv
2 new cylinder heads which were reground... will have to look at the invoice for the rest of the bits
the mechanic did a few miles to run it in and I have done about 750 miles but my foot is heavier than his even though I have been restrained and good

BRAND new? If so, I guess it'll be with new piston rings at least, and possibly - ideally - new pistons too.

In which case, you should not labour the engine nor rev it excessively high for - ooh - 500 miles minimum?

(Unless there's something I don't know about the etc etc...)

Did you just edit the post above to add the 'he did a few miles and you've done 750 more...'?

If not, then I'm goin' blind as well as stoopid...

Should be ok, then! :)

yea, soz I'm a bit of a rampant post editor :)

I think I have done 750 miles, can't believe it really... have filled the tank 2 or 3 times since getting it back so it must be.

Have been careful not to labour it and until today had not been upto the magic 70 number, been trying to 'stretch' it upto the higher revs also

What, exactly, have you had replaced, and was it with new or used parts?

I must be missing something - or is the 2CV's completely different to every other internal combustion engine (don't answer...) - but shouldn't he be takin' it a bit easy for a few 100 miles at least?

Justin / DA
its the bearings in the engine that benifit from the "gentle" running in period

new cams and followers are run in at fixed eye watering revs for 20 mins

piston rings and barrels are run in by loading them up so the rings are forced against the bores running it up to 60 and going back down to 30 on engine braking a good few times is one method, other recomended methods have been towing a trailer of sand or driving up hills

but generally its just get out and use it

there is nothing to do "running in" new or worked on cylinder heads

if the rings are new Justin it'll be time for first oil change soon, there will be a big grey furry sump plug needing cleaned too. Cylinder head nuts should really be re torqued too

Sean
