Roo wrote: Cat D would be a blessing, but I'm growing battle weary! What would need doing, I mean, it's a mess, cat C seemed fair to me? It isn't about fair, its about what you can get from the insurance. Moving it from a C to a D costs them nothing, but it has a value to you. I reckon that at the very least it is worth asking the question. Worst case they refuse. I've had a car moved from being a write off to no marker at all without demur from the insurer. Ultimately it all depends on what you intend to do with the car, if your intention is to rebuild it is worth messing with, if you're going to break it then it is academic. Probably if it was mine, given the amount of damage it seems to have, I'd be inclined to find another car that doesn't have the write off stigma and use this one as spares. Given the amount of damage you're listing I reckon 600 quid is rather strong for the salvage.

Still any accident you walk away from is a good accident. I just read his kill list again, it does seem debatable whether it is realistically repairable without a donor car. If he does get a donor might as well rebuild that and use this car for spares. That way you don't end up with the write off on the history of the car.

 Re: Much sympathy...
I think as long as the car is allowed back on the road does it matter what category I is? Does anybody buy 2cvs on the basis of previous owners, mileage or history? Maybe it's just me but I'd rather go on condition. obviously it'd be easier to buy another car and break that up but it's hardly beyond the realms of a rebuild, all it wants is a chassis, a bit of welding and a few panels. That's no different to any 2cv resto.

CatD - just needs an MOT. CatC - needs a vehicle identity check, which (with a replacement chassis & shell) it should fail, leading to all the paperwork hassles of a new VIN being allocated. CatB - has to be crushed.

 Re: Much sympathy...
Perhaps I've read it wrong, wasn't it declared cat c?
See, this is why when I stack cars I won't go through insurance unless I've hit somebody/something that's not mine. I can't deal with paperwork, I feel rude haggling and I can't be bothered to spend my life on the phone. I'd sooner bash the dents out or weigh it and learn not to crash. I've achieved everything except the last part. Hence m next cars having a cage in it!

 Re: Much sympathy...
'A' is straight to the crusher At the moment I'm trying to find examples of Dyanes in a better state for under 600. Geoff reckons he's done cat C buy backs for 45quid. Any more examples?

Jonathan wrote: What's Cat A then? Sweep up with dustpan and brush? Cat A is generally reserved for burnt out cars. The other reason a car will end up as a Cat A is where it is contaminated. Basically code for too much human tissue to clean up. No parts can be re used from a Cat A car. Cat B can't be put back on the road, but it is allowed to take parts from it.
