I carry most of my tools in my boot at all times.
In addition to the obvious [o/e & ring spanners,socket set,screwdriver set,allen keys,pliers etc .....]

Fire extuinguisher .....beside the drivers seat [ie,where you get to it in a hurry .....not in the boot!

Scissor jack [leave the sidejack at home, its useless]
Old kingpin & hammer [for removing fan]
12v tyre pump.
Feeler gauges.
Tow rope.
Jump leads
Basic circuit tester [a bit of wire with a 12v bulb attached]
Small torch.
Sharp Knife.
Small hacksaw.
Tin of tyre weld [yes,it does work ...bt,dt,gtts] ;)

Spare .....bulbs,fuses,fan belt and pulley.....plus coil, leads, plugs ......[and condensor & points .....even though I've got EI fitted I'm still a pessimist]
A few cable connector blocks and a spare length of electrical wire.

Cable ties,Duct tape and assorted bits of alloy wire [wire does'nt melt when it gets hot]

Old 'bikers Tip ;) .....take one 240v household electrical plug, remove the three brass "prongs" and hacksaw the inner ends off, then grind or file the sharp edges off ......these can then be used to repair a broken cable.

;) I guess you're refering to the one I use to remove the handbrake pads .... ;)
Yeah ......I carry that too. ;)

Most of the above fits in my toolbox [which is kept beside the spare wheel]....the bulkier items all fit in the spare wheel [which I try to keep clean] ......the whole lot is then covered with a square of carpet [handy if you have to start crawling under the car when is wet or if you have clean clothes on]

Plus ..... ;) Mobile phone,RAC card,12v phone charger and  .......a spare ciggie tin with bit o' baccy,a lighter and a packet of spare papers.
Thats all I can think of .......for now

Wot Tel, no flask and biscuits?

I've just noticed that my boot lid lock doesn't lock. It did before, so I don't know what I've done different to it? I'll fix it but I'm also paranoid about having my tools nicked, so I'm reluctant to carry so many around.

Up to now it's:

Scissor jack and wheel brace.
Pliers.
Mole grips
One of each screwdrivers.
8,10,11,13,17, and 20something (I forget which) spanners.
Cable ties,
Duck tape
electrical tape
Spare Coil
Bulb set

It's too easy to bend a 2CV bootlid to worry about locking it .......hence my "cover it all with a good thick carpet" way of thinking.
You could of course, bolt a stout metal box [ex army ammo box?????] to the boot floor .......have the nut inside the box and a good lock on it.

Post Re: Essential tool kit?
For my normal 2CV, I have one of those cheap Chinese toolkits that have a selection of metric combination spanners, screwdrivers, pliers, 1/4" and 3/8" sockets, electrical wire strippers. electrical tape and connectors. It is all neat and tidy and has most of what I need.

I also carry a spare fanbelt and accelerator cable, but no coil or points as I have a yellow Harley coil and Luminition ignition. I usually have an old set of spark plugs and a litre of engine oil.

I always carry an old towel and some hand cleaning lotion, needed even when changing a tyre. I use the standard jack. I find the scissor type doesn't have the reach when jacking up the rear.

For the Raid 2CV, I carefully select the spanners and sockets to keep down weight. Also add feeler guages (only need 0.20mm for the valve clearance). Also have a knife, electrical tape, duct tape, electrical wire, normal wire to tie knife edge clips to stop them being ripped off. A grease gun (just with black grease for both driveshafts and kingpins). 5l of oil, 1l gearbox oil, oil filters and spark plugs (enough for anticipated number of 5,000km services). A cheap Chinese hand operated tyre pump and a packet of large disposable nappies ( use one under each rocker arm cover to collect oil when they are removed, plus another under the oil filter when it is removed. They are also useful for general cleaning of grease nipples prior to and after greasing and as general absorbtion of oil and grease).

I take a spare fanbelt and tyre tubes plus tyre patches and tubeless tyre plugs, along with tyre levers. That car also has an extra spare tyre. It has a yellow Harley coil and 123 ignition, so no spare coils or points are taken. I also take a special hex tie rod adjuster plus appropriate ring spanner with a bit cut out for vehicle height adjustment. Two bits of wood are the correct length for the front and rear heights.

I carry few other spares. Maybe a front and rear knife edge and some spare clips. Generally any dubious bits are replaced with new ones before the Raid. You don't want to be breaking down in the middle of nowhere.
