Post Re: Whats been...
Ah, well then, that is easy ;) The last time I did Raid Tan Hill, about 6 years ago. :(

Left Worcester about half five in the morning and trundled upto Tamworth Services on the M42, to meet up with Spanners. On the way to Tamworth the 2cv coughed and spluttered on occasions, but nothing too nasty. From Tamworth to Leeds it did an occasional cough n splutter, but continued to make progress, so did'nt worry(too much).

Well we got to Leeds and to the pub carpark with no issues. Had a bacon sarnie or two and headed off into the wilds of the Yorkshire Dales. Now you're expecting me to say the car acted up like a right bloody pig, but no, you are wrong....it behaved faultlessly, all the way to Tan Hill :)

When I left Tan Hill though.........

Got about 10 miles from the pub, heading for the M6, when it suddenly coughed, spluttered and died!! After numerous attempts to get it to start, I got on the phone to the RAC. When the chap arrived the car started ok :o So he waffled on about carburettor icing and it should be ok now...and left :? Well I was 2 miles from the M6, so got onto the carriageway and headed south....for 8 miles.....yes,it conked out 50yrds from the services :( After pushing it into the safety of the said services, I rang the RAC again. Two hours later another chap turned up and the car started :o So he quite rudely said that his time was better spent elsewhere(or words to that effect)...and left  Back onto the motorway for about..Hmmmm,yes you've guessed it...8-10 miles and chug,chug,chug.."Great!!"stuck between the exit n entry sliproad on J36!!

"RAC? Yes, can you send a low-load truck and not one of your useless monkeys, clearly me car needs looking at by somebody who understands cars!!!" "By the way,I'm stuck between the exit n entry sliproad on J36" Two hours later,I see a low-load truck coming down the entry sliproad, the guy looks over his shoulder and sees my car..so stops and jumps out, only to say he can't back up and has to go down to J35 and back upto J37 to get to me........another hour!! Got home at 1am Monday morning....I've not done Tan Hill since ;)

And the problem? The condensor!! I now have 123ignition fitted :)

Post Re: Whats been...
On the way to Dunkerque last year.....Rumbling along with all the other cars, my car starts to kind of hop like a kangaroo and lose power. So I slow down a bit and pray it doesnt get any worse. Then my steering starts to shake really violently and I pull over to the hard shoulder. My back tyre is in tatters. So Luke and Max change it for me at the side of the motorway.
Little bit closer toward Dover, we pull into services where everyone was waiting for us after my tyre incident. I'm following a Czech lorry, which suddenly realises it's going into the car only part of the services, and stops, midway round a roundabout. The lorry is two trailers long. It starts to reverse. I try to put my car in reverse, but it just cuts out and will not start again. The lorry is still reversing, the lorry hits my car. Of course all of this time I've been on the horn incessantly shouting and stuff. My passenger is being really helpful by just swearing a lot. So I just put the car in neutral and let it roll back with the lorry, which is now hooked over my bumper, and crushing the front of my bonnet. Luckily, Luke was behind me and pulled around the side of me and tells the lorry driver to stop. Which he does eventually. He comes over and says he speaks no English, and did I want the police? I said no I just wanted to get to the bloody ferry. Which we did, in the end. A bit stressed.

Also, I was present for the stressful journey Max described...

haha I'd forgotten about that! Wonder if we'll meet him again on the way to the world meeting?

Not sure what my most eventful journey's been, the trip to Helmsley was fairly interesting. I'd had a bit of an 'incident' with a 4x4 the previous week, which had left me with a smashed coil (amongst other things), and so set off for Yorkshire with 5 spare coils I'd managed to scrape together. Turned out they were all duff. There was a lot of stopping and starting and swearing on that trip, and since then I've had a Suzuki coil on it!

Another contender is probably an overnight trip from Oxford to Cornwall in the D*lly with a trailer a few years ago. It was blowing an absolute gale, and I had to stop at least 10 times along the way to move things out of the road, bits of tree, wheelie bins, etc. and then managed to run into a fallen tree about 2 miles from home! At least it was a fairly soft thing to hit. Turned out the car behind me was a police car!

So far, just the one eventful journey and it was only a short one (30 miles). First of all it was Mrs Bertie's 1st (and only) meeting, she was under duress to go & it was the first time she'd been an A series, let alone a Bedouin.

After about 15 miles we hit a pothole and the rear end came off the nearside suspension can causing the car to list. It was still driveable though. Then, after I stopped to get her a bottle of vodka (to get over the trauma) the car refused to start (hot coil) so I had to bump start by rolling down a hill.

She made it clear she wasn't having a good time once we arrived & had a face like a smacked arse for the rest of the weekend which is why I'll always be at future meetings on my own (which suits me ;) )

Post Re: Whats been...
Most remembering to me is a breakdown we had in France. We went for a weekend to Disney, and on the way to Disney, the car started to leak oil, smelling like burning rubber. Made it to the hotel, and called the guys from ANWB. I thought it was a leaking pushrod seal, because the engine leaked the most at that point. ANWB was going to find a garage that was able to fix that so I could get home.

On sundaymorning they called me back, to tell me a beavertail had left 50km away to pick up the car and bring it to a garage (on sunday, yes, in france.. Unbeleavable!!).
Drove the car on the bed and went to the garage.
Told the guys, in bad French, with help of the Mehari Club Catalogue what I thought the problem was. Garageman asked me to start the engine. Started it, and when I got back with the mechanics and looked at the engine, I saw a fan that wasn't doing wat it supposed to do..

Broken pulley :)

Helped the garage by removing the mesh and heart of the pully (in my nice clothes). They welded everythinh back in place, I refitted it. Then on my way... Had a bad oil smell the first few miles, but after that I made it back to the hotel, with the beavertail behind me, in case of..
