You could buy a hacked up bug anywhere, but to take a cimos dyane back to holland would be pretty unique, you'd be able to be proud of it and you'd know more about keeping it on the road. A dyane will be considerably nicer to drive and a squillion times easier to work on and maintain.

If you knew of the contempt I hold for the vw then you'd probably applaude my restrain and level headed, considered reply.

Here's the less considered and restrained version:

if you buy the beetle you'll be forever cursing it's piss-poor handling, it's infuriatingly bad design and it's unbelievably inefficient engine. And that one looks like one of the village people commisioned it as a runabout for thier trips round the boutiques of San Francisco.

You were never going to get a *true* unbiased opinion...

A friend of mine is a hardened VW owner/enthusiast & currently owns a 1967 split screen van, a 1972 1300 Beetle & a 1994 T4 transporter. The amount of money he's poured into them is scary - it easily runs into tens of thousands of pounds. He's previously owned 1986 Daihatsu Fourtrak, V*uxhall Nova GTE, etc

He's admitted to me on more than one occasion that the 2cv he had a brief dalliance with was by far & away the best car he's owned! A car that cost £800! If a VW enthusiast can admit that, i think you know what to do!

shame it ended up like this:

Am I right in thinking €2500 for a modified beetle is cheap? I mean, really, really cheap? I thought ropey beetles went for that kind of money?

Buying the bug for the soft top doesn't really make sense, the dyane's a soft top too...

Neil, what sort of speed was your friend travelling at, when he hit the dog?

I will say, about 6-7yrs ago I was approaching a major crossroads with traffic-lights with two cars over to the middle of the road, waiting to turn right, the lights were on green, so they were waiting for on-coming traffic to pass, I saw a nice clear road and so continued straight on at 30mph...Into an Astra coming the other way, turning right :o She just didn't see me  Anyway, the 2cv's front near-side corner was crumpled, but after a quick tug on the wing & bumper, I continued on my way(after getting her details). 2cv is fine :D ...Tough B@s@rd of a car

"Dog" is the guys name.

If you look in the background of the first picture you'll see a mullered garage. He left it on the hill, just on the handbrake, went inside to make a drink, heard a bang & looked out the door to find his 2cv had run away! All the garage's in that block were shafted & had to be demolished!

He wasn't flavour of the month in that road, let me tell ya! Irrate people that couldn't get their bikes & cars out of their garages to go to work, etc. How it missed all the park cars on it's way down the hill, i'll never know! Especially that 3 series Bimmer!

Another vote for the dyane.

Even the mice in my wardrobe are voting for the dyane.
