I actually thought about this on my way to work, trying to keep an open mind, I wondered about driving my car for a week with standard points and the next week, exactly the same journeys, with 123, measuring everything, fuel economy, and then top speed/accelleration, carrying the exact same load in the car etc, and seeing whether the 123 would pay for itself in the long run, compared to points.

It wouldn't be a blind test, then, would it? You'd have to not know which ignition system it was running to be a proper test.

Is it worth mentioning that the fully electronic units don't survive an 'over voltage' episode very well?

Barry ( of window prop fame) rang me last week to ask if there was any device which would monitor battery voltage and give a warning if it went too high, as he'd cooked both his battery and 123 on his recent trip to the French National. :(

Best I could suggest was a decent voltmeter...

does anyone have a rev gauge on there 2cv?

i dont want to pay the huge price to buy one, but just wondering if they work etc

I wasn't suggesting a blind test, merely a comparison betwixt the two. If you're measuring the results, it doesn't matter if I know which ignition system is running, only the facts and figures at the end.

I switched to using 123s because my Dad and I experienced a few condenser failures in the late 90s and early 00s (with one very bad spate of them in about 1997). We've been using 123s since 2002 and so far so good (probably spoke too soon there!)..

A demonstration at a meeting, or even better a good youtube guide would be fantastic.

I find it most frustrating that the only thing that has beaten me on the damned thing so far is the bogstandard ignition system.

have volt meter from a Dyane - because my fan came off once, and 2 alts have failed.

Have a rev counter as its quite intresting seeing what the engine is doing. HD one. Bought off US ebay when the £ got you 2 $ so paid about £35 with shipping

For what it's worth, I run points on all my cars and tend to replace them every year purely because I can, after all, they're so cheap! But, I've only ever had one set fail and that was condensor problems.

I run a standard Citroen coil because I'm too tight to buy a Harley one and, I'm not terribly sure I need one-I don't have any starting/running/performance problems.

Lastly, I've got a converted GS rev counter on mine, it's not 100% accurate but does give you an idea. Plus, with a lightened flywheel etc on my car, it's fun to watch!

im going for the harley coil eventually, as my car doesnt like starting when its warm, my car (touch wood) always starts in the end!

im going to replace the points and condenser soon,

and i may save up for a proper rev gauage from ecas

easy to fit?
