Viking no, I hadn't undone the steering lock first! This is exactly the type of thing I wanted to avoid, I'm so close to finishing this car and yet so close to selling it too as I'm now getting real fed up with having to repeatedly take backward steps. I forget something, get annoyed, then break something else in temper.

What do I need to undo just the steering lock mechanism with the allen key through it or more?

Yes the anti theft device clamped around the column is removed using an allen key.
If you can weld you can do this tool in 5 mins. No more hammering

Viking, and all, thank you for your help and advice. I got the column off, and as you reminded me I hadn't removed the allen keys in the steering lock which I'd forgotten about! It's done now, but with some repainting of things to do because I damaged them due to my lack of patience. It always amazes me when people remark on my blog how patient I must be, in person I'm not unfortunately, just the opposite in fact, and before I'll just stand back and think for a moment I'll often fly into a rage and do untold damage.

I just can't get a handle on this 'patience' thing at all....

You sound like me, except I don't have the ability to do a good job first before getting fed up, my 'bollocks to this' threshold is far, far lower than yours!
