<shrug>
I'd have said £650 labour for all the work wasn't a horrific hourly rate, by any stretch of the imagination.

Even if it'd been DIY'd the parts bill would be the same, so...

Yeh. A work mate seems to spend 1500 on his 90s range rover regularly, at least you have a fairly sorted 2cv now and if you keep on top of it won't be having a bill like that again for a long long while.

well, as already said, that kind of money goes a very long way on a 2cv so you should be fixed for a long time if you keep on top of it.

I'm not so sure about that. At one time I'd have agreed wholeheartedly, but my last car was a £350 1998 Saab 900 which I bought off ebay. In the eighteen months I owned it, I did a net total of no maintenance and spent £45 on a clutch cable, £40 on a tyre and £26 on a rear silencer. It flew through one MOT and was sold for £200 when it failed the next. Oh, and for much of the time I owned it I was commuting from Monmouth to Wednesbury, which is 75 miles each way. However much you spent on an A series, it'd struggle to be as cheap as that given similar usage.
Of course, we all know that's not why we buy them. :)

I went to pickup the 2CV the bill was £2500, when I got down the road the spark plug blew out so it went back again. He is going to do the bad compression on one side and the head on the other as he said that the helicoil is now on the largest size. Not sure where the money is going to come from for this!

Still for the 15 mins I drove it it did feel nice and the running gear feels 100% better.
