As above really + how do I fit them to a new wheel? Looks like I need to squeeze them with something?

Small screwdriver under one of the lips, and just ping 'em in. Same to put 'em back - screwdriver through the hole onto one lip, other lip in place, and *ping*...

One of my most jealously guarded tools is a simple piece of spring steel with a hook shape on one end - a genuine Compaq captive-nut fitting tool, intended for computer racks. Flick, flick, flick, flick - a handful of captives removed. Plonk, flick, plonk, flick, plonk, flick - and back in.
This kind of thing :- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/380159186011

Hi Sam .....my advice is forget the old captive nuts and buy four new ones.
It makes an awful mess of the hubcap when the captive "cage" thingy shears and you cant remove the wheel nuts.....[unless anyone knows a way to remove the hubcap with the cage sheared .... :? ]
I keep meaning to fix mine with a small spot weld, but then again,I need some new wheels anyway .... :|

I'm with Terry here, once you've got the 20+ year old nuts off your old wheels they will probably be fatigued and prone to failure. Buy some new ones.
