I didn't realise this was the same car that I've seen recently until I read all the way through the thread!

Probably a bit late now, but can you take some pics of how to rewind it? If not I'll open a box up at the weekend and do it. Just saves me getting my pinkies dirty!

I was coming down the single track from work which is a steep hill and had to stop and reverse back up to a passing place to let a lorry through, i didn't go very fast just it was up hill i think.

I think i'm going to put my spare box in, this one has been repaired once and was heavily piened all the way round so it shouldn't have gone that easy, but i don't know :? plus it's never been the same since i unwound it last time it crunched into 1st and 3rd lots and 3rd gear seemed very loud and winey.

Ok mate, I was going to do a how-to on rewinding a box at the weekend. I noticed the bamboo box was never as nice after I did it the first time, bit it was never so bad that I felt compelled to open it up again!

Harry,
sounds as though the rear bearing may be on the way out...

I did a complete rebuild on a box last week, then a quick 'peen and bearing swap while you wait' job on one today.
On both gearboxes, the main shaft ( speedo drive) nuts had defeated the original method of locking and could almost be unscrewed by hand.
Since that allows the main shaft to move forwards, I reckon that either this fault, or a 'floppy' bearing, is just as much to blame for an unwinding episode as the poor job Citroen did of peening the selector ring.

Don't forget to hit the slots when you peen the selector ring, as that will be much more secure than bashing the bits in between...

Whenever I do a chassis change, or put an 'unknown' second hand gearbox back into service, I always carry out both of these jobs, especially since the 6304NR bearings can be bought for under a fiver.

Loctite 638 will make very sure those nuts don't work loose.
