Update:

Everything is ready for departure this Sunday... 10 months of planning, scrounging, fundraising and excitement, only to be greeted by an email this morning from our rally organisers with the heading:

"We have some very bad news to break to you."

Basically the foreign office have given a big no no to travelling through Mauritania. Since Al Quaeda have admitted to taking out the Spaniards recently and have threatened westerners with more terrorism in the area they had a personal meeting with the rally organisers:

http://ukinmorocco.fco.gov.uk/en/newsroom/?view=News&id=21412725

As this is a completely unsupported 'raid' and the organisers are not preparing any armed convoys as such we have three options:

1. Just drive it anyway

2. Ship the car from Tilbury to Dakar and endure more hefty costs (the organisers' solution)

3. Just stay at home

The whole point of the rally was to leave your front door, get in the 2CV and arrive in Cameroon sometime later.. not stick the car on a ship and drive the rest! What makes things worse is that the Touareg Trail just drove that route in November without any issues. I guess events can change very quickly.

I think the pub may have some answers...

You know it does...

I'm feeling rather less bad about bottling out of the Mali thing now - real shame, because the reason we bottled was that Mauri was the "dull, safe" route but the only viable one...

I think I'd rather meet AQ than the FO, tbh.

Bad times!

I hope you do drive it there. there seems little point in shipping the car the whole way, and staying home seems a waste of effort, even faced with the risk.

If you don't go, terrorism has won. ;)

Don't take any shit from the fuzzy-wuzzies.
