Ebay?

A series valve caps are around 30mm diameter, so there's an adaptor which should fit...

'Top end only' rebuild?
If that's the case, there's no gasket sealant needed for the push rod seals or at the 'base of barrel to crankcase' joints.
Some Copaslip/ generic copper grease at joint between heads and barrels can help give a perfect seal.

Couple of quick questions.
1. Anyone know where I can get a cheap valve spring compressor that will definitely fit my 2CV engine? I've just tried to use mine (sat in a box for years, since I did the job on an old Saab 96) and it won't fit! I just had a look at Roy's and regrettably they're a bit beyond Sir's budget.
2. Is there any need to use gasket sealant when re-assembling a 2CV engine?

Thanks Ken. How about if I've split the case to have a look inside?

If you've gone that far, a good quality joint sealant is essential.
Since Red Hermetite disappeared, I've been using Wellseal and reckon that it's better...

100ml is OK if you're not doing engines and gearboxes regularly, otherwise go for the 500ml tin. ;)
Thoroughly clean & degrease the joint surfaces, of course.

Great! Just spent the Christmas money my dear old Mom gave me! She'll be so proud that I blew it on bits for my van!

Before I split it, I gave it a bath in petrol. Just sat it in a tub and poured a litre or so over it, left it to soak in for a bit, then scrubbed it with a metal scourer from Lidl (they're ace!), re-applying the petrol from the tub and scrubbing gently. The engine's still got a bit of grime here and there, but it's good enough for me.

Then, when I'd split the case and stripped it down I swabbed out the insides with an oily rag soaked in petrol.

All I can say is that I have the most understanding wife in the world.

One interesting side note to this is that it makes me a much neater and more disciplined worker, and that I always tidy up fastidiously after I've finished... which is more than can be said for when I'm working in the garage! So for my missus it's a win: she ends up with a clean kitchen!

She has to stay out when I'm working in there though. The chaos makes her head spin!
