This looks great. I'm no more interested in tractions than I am in any other car from the period but its lovely to see one put straight again with such attention to detail. I normally drive stuff until its broken then either bin them or just fix what's broken, I'd love to be able to do what you're doing.

Repairable or a new tank. It is only this patch that is rusty, the hole is big enough to have a look in and the rest of the tank looks solid enough but I can't really tell for sure.

I am thinking with the cost of the repair then the treatment of the tank etc it may be cheaper to go for a new tank at €222. Anyone had a tank repaired and restored before.

Looks like a sump thats rotted, lowest point to collect the 'heavier' water? So if all the water was there and rest of the tank is sound then welding a patch on should be fine. And cheap! ;)
I guess there is no trace of fuel now so no risk of igniting it - fill it with water for a bit if in doubt. Decent weld shouldn't leak but sloshing a tank sealing liquid around in it after welding will seal it all.

Interesting stuff Smiffy, I have to do the tank on the AZU @ some point too. There never was a plastic tank for the vans was there? I have a spare car one which I guess would fit but wouldn't be right :shock:
Gerty has a steel tank. no problems so far, very shiney on the outside but no idea wots going on inside... :?

If using a tank seller product, from what I hear it's important to make sure it's compatible with modern fuels, and that you follow the instructions to the letter. A good tig weldor shouldn't have any problem getting it sealed, tig is distinctly better than Mig in that respect, the issue would be finding someone prepared to weld it for you. Personally I would do it for myself, but you may find most professional places won't.
If you want to clean any rust from the inside there are commercially available products, but molasses has worked very well for me in the past.

It's worth bearing in mind that if you use a sealer, life suddenly becomes much harder if you decide you want to weld it in the future, as well!

I've Mig-welded myself these 2 tanks about 25 years ago... Theey are still going strong.

Remeber those, first model had a slight problem (warped) .... we tried to put it right with lowering the CX on it but it gave way with a loud bang :lol: :lol:
