Could it be that all three gaps had lined up and was allowing pressure into the block?

Back to the shed, I'd forgotten about a box of M4 goodies.
End gap for these new oil control rings in a used barrel is 0.55mm.

Also found this...

Lets not get side tracked. In terms of blowby, the 3 rings are in good condition not allowing any compression to pass. At the other end, no oil is passing upwards (to the compression chamber). The compression chamber is dry as bone. Therefore the blowby is no existence in this case. I'm pretty sure that rings can be eliminated in this case. Still the housing is filling up rather quickly

and they stay at that position for about 5 minutes of running - the rings do rotate during use

Is it possible for the rings to perform OK at the top end of the barrel - eg so you don't get blow by oil going into the combustion chamber and thereby no blue smoke through the exhaust - but don't make a good seal at the bottom of the stroke so that exhaust gases start to pressurise the engine and thereby blow oil into the filter box?

other way round, wear is in the first 20mm or so of the swept area

barrels look a bit polished - did you hone them before fitting the new rings?

I think blow by is (or can) be (much) higher under load.

You only need to open the throttle a little to speed up the engine to 5/6000 rpm at idle. Slight throttle valve opening means a big/strong pressure drop over the throttle valve in the carb and low top firing pressure and relatively low blowby. So when you test your good engine breather in the garage, it can provide/keep crankcase depression.

When driving under load you open the throttle further or complete, so lower dp on the throttle valve(s) in the carb with a higher top firing pressure in the combustion chamber. When driving under load with worn barrels and or rings the blow by could be higher than at idle testing (where your breather didn't show a problem) but now a lot of oil fumes are blown through the breather into your air filter.

Maybe this helps. Didn't read the entire topic so if I misunderstood something/miss the point, sorry.

p.s many of my friends have the ECAS breather and I haven't heard of any bad experience with them.

Bart there is no blowby OK?

Lets move on.

What is the solution?

Bart,
total agreement here... ;)
Also, did we ever learn if this engine has 8.5 or 9.0:1 pistons?
