Helicoil, I've found the Snap On style inserts come out with the first spark plug change.

Change the cylinder head, you know it makes sense in the long run.

One of my cylinders has a threaded insert. no problems with it since it had been done. but i have not been there when during spark plug changes so im not sure what would be better.

As in loctite? You don't use loctite with a helicoil.

No, but you may well do with an insert.

Viking,
I've used KD inserts a long time back, but even with the correct ( high temperature?) thread locking compound, they had a habit of coming out with the plug. :(
< http://www.mytoolstore.com/kd/kdengi11.html >

After that, the local motor cycle shop would fit Timeserts, but only if the head was removed from the engine.

Those were very good, however the bike shop closed down so I started using Helicoils and have never had a problem with one I've fitted.
At Kelso, even though I wasn't connected with the 'on site' garage, they ran out of Helicoils and 'borrowed' more than a few of the supply of spark plug Helicoils I happened to be carrying with me.

Paul,
interesting that you should advise changing the head, since a time served engineer I know would fit helicoils in the heads of any engines he was building, as a matter of course.
Not just the plug threads, but the M7 threads on both the oil feeds and inlet manifolds as well...

ken.
