Depends how you use your car, I suppose ... lots of motorway mileage means a heavy flywheel is the way to go, mostly pottering around town means you're probably better off with a lighter one. Personally I've used both over the years and am far from convinced I could actually tell the differencce in a blind test.

That's why I asked the question earlier.

What is the difference between the weight of a 'heavy+spring clutch and a 'light'+diaphragm clutch?

oh bolloks im not going back up to the lockup to start weighing flywheels ;)

its more and the weight is out at the circumference therefore making it a highly desirable "Kinetic" one.

Simply comparing the weights won't give an accurate basis for comparison, since the rotational inertia of a flywheel is dependent on the location of its mass.

If you look at a 'heavy' flywheel, especially of the type fitted on older engines such as the M4, you'll notice that there is a lot more metal near the outer edge where its 'flywheel effect' is much greater.

I'll leave you to crunch the numbers, whilst I get on with some more low value metal bashing...

yes but i can now have a diaphram clutch with a heavy flywheel it seems

just off to college for a dose of inglish ;)

i will return back and take a picture of gear box with mr tape measure next to it :)

its all falling into place :) so looks like hjeavy flywheel will be acceptable now

my question is can i keep the box ive got in my car, or is the clutch mounted on the box not the heavy flywheel on the engine..~?

The clutch is mounted on teh flywheel. The only thing you'll need to change on the gearbox is the clutch release bearing, which is clutch specific.

righyto thanks jon, answered that question, and i assume that can be done with the box in the car?

just reluctant to take the box out as it means messing with the breaks and i dont want to mess with the breaks...

thinking about sticking the dyane engine in next week one evening after work, got a good lit workshop, shall ask boss tomoro, and seeing what happens,
better take push bike just incase!!
