I've been dreading this, so instead of asking what to use, I have an awful lot of halfrauds finest 15W40 mineral oil - will it do? :?

And therefore a testament that you don't have to spend lots on oil to keep your engine going well. I suspect you change for filter often though.

I generally change the filter as and when I change the axle bolts, around 3-6000 miles. I don't think brand really matters as long as the engine has oil in it and you change it at regular intervals.

Dont know what all the angst over oil is about

as long as you check the API numbers(or eqivalent) and go for the best you an afford

dirty brand x is almost certainly worse for your engine than clean morrisons

as for the diesel - its 'cause its the right weight AND cheap 25l for <£40 from costco and the added benifits of the higher detergent are secondary.

As long as its the recommended type (15W40 or whatever), can you actually tell the difference between oils unless you are involved with the maintenance or repair of the engine?

Just put some in. And if you drive an Allegro, put some more in next week. And then some more next week. And some more the week after.

GTX when it's on offer, mostly Halfords own brand. Oil and filter annually or every 3000 miles. Any oil is better than no oil.

Wonder if I've been neglecting oil and filter changes, by using Citroen's recommended service intervals of 5,000 miles for the oil and 10,000 miles for the filter? :?

Doesn't seem to have harmed any of the engines, with the daily driver's engine well on its way to a quarter of a million miles... ;)

My 'maintenance guide Petrol 87' has 6000 miles for oil and 12000 for oil filter. I wish Citroen would be consistent.
