BRAND new? If so, I guess it'll be with new piston rings at least, and possibly - ideally - new pistons too.

In which case, you should not labour the engine nor rev it excessively high for - ooh - 500 miles minimum?

I think I have done 750 miles, can't believe it really... have filled the tank 2 or 3 times since getting it back so it must be.

Have been careful not to labour it and until today had not been upto the magic 70 number, been trying to 'stretch' it upto the higher revs also

its the bearings in the engine that benifit from the "gentle" running in period

new cams and followers are run in at fixed eye watering revs for 20 mins

piston rings and barrels are run in by loading them up so the rings are forced against the bores running it up to 60 and going back down to 30 on engine braking a good few times is one method, other recomended methods have been towing a trailer of sand or driving up hills

but generally its just get out and use it

there is nothing to do "running in" new or worked on cylinder heads

if the rings are new Justin it'll be time for first oil change soon, there will be a big grey furry sump plug needing cleaned too. Cylinder head nuts should really be re torqued too
