You're more than welcome to, but it's locked in the workshop and I won't be there until Wednesday, although if you're desperate I could swing by Tuesday at some point. Your wheels should be done on Thursday, if I can I'll go and get them before work.

samfieldhouse wrote: While I did this and cleaned all the parts that Peter asked me to clean, he reassembled the box and sorted the brakes out as one side had the wrong size cylinder fitted. <coughs, shuffles feet> I fitted those front cylinders. I didn't compare them against each other, 'tis true - they were bought as a pair, and in boxes that were marked up the same. Honest! samfieldhouse wrote: Just broken an oil feed pipe... Yeh, I fitted those, too - when the (repaired) ones that were on broke at the Dutch WM. Het obviously has a thing for being centre of attention at big camps. (But I never took the lid off the gearbox. Honestly. I didn't. There'll be an invoice in the folder from whoever did rebuild it, though.)

Re: Belgian built 1969 AK350 'Hetty'
Adrian, I wouldn't worry about it, as I reckon that fatigue failure of the differential shaft on Hetty was initiated a very long time ago, possibly by the shock loading which required replacement of the first/reverse pinion. Given that a gearbox is a 'torque multiplication' mechanism, the load which broke a tooth ( or teeth? ) on the first/reverse pinion would have been increased by a factor of over 20 by the time it reached the differential shaft. That could have been enough to induce the cracks which have since spread with use, resulting in failure when Sam administered the coup de grace when setting off at a T junction. If you look at Sam's photograph of the broken shaft, you can see that the outer edges of the shaft had given up some time ago, with the core left to struggle on for as long as it could. It's not a unique event, here's an input shaft which went the same way, although I understand that wheelspins from the traffic lights in first gear were involved with this poor thing... ken Gearbox (no)input shaft by slcchassis, on Flickr toomany2cvs wrote: (But I never took the lid off the gearbox. Just taken the fan off and confirmed that right hand oil feed pipe/banjo assembly is dripping so will get it sorted tomorrow.
Interesting that pic Ken, and again, I'm glad that it wasn't me that caused the problem!

They're just shite, rather than there being a prob with one side or the other. The one that went before had been previously brazed back together. I assumed it was a poor quality fix - these ones hadn't been touched before.

Re: Belgian built 1969 AK350 'Hetty'
I changed them back in September after the right hand one split on the way back from the Van camp. Thing is, I replaced them with 40 year old okish looking ones, least these are new and solid so hopefully ok
