Sorted the no charging, fuel gauge, indicators and the like, after they failed last night. Just a blown fuse. Went or a spin with the roof half open and for the first time got wacked on the head by the frame I'd not secured lol!

bought some bits and pieces to get the blue one back to life, and start on the Dyane ...more a theoretical start than any actual metal cutting.

Drove it over the Downs and for the first time since before Christmas it went up them @ 30mph+ in 3rd instead of 15mph in 2nd, hurrah.

It was rather grand to see it again. I always felt it suits the rural setting up there.

This evening I changed a middle drive shaft boot for the first time. Managed to do it whilst the other half cooked tea! Wondering now what I've missed because it appeared to go a bit easily...

Which end did you remove the drive shaft from? I've always done it by taking it out of the hub, but I wonder if it's easier to take it off the gearbox end.

Yes I took it out of the hub too. I did look up various posts on here and other places and the hub end seemed to me to be the most popular so I went with that one. I also thought that access would be easier rather than reaching in over the wing and I would be able to better fight the boot over the splines on the bench. A greased cone from a cut up plastic bottle was 'made' for that bit.

I am very happy so far that this went well. Good also for 10 year old helper to see a job go well without any cursing! Though, I'm ready for it to not go as well when I have to do the other car that needs the full set of boots on both drive shafts and both track rod end boots as well. I can't really picture how the t-shaped boot goes over...

So that you don't lose any credibility with the trainee, steering ball goes into the gaiter first, then you start to feed the 'tube' part of the gaiter onto the (cleaned & greased) track rod end housing.

As long as the slot in the underside of the housing is aligned with the ball, it's all over in a moment, so you might want to drag things out to make it look difficult...
