After years of earache about not taking enough care of our own cars, I've been treating the management's Dyane to some low-value metal bashing.

Still got some earache about her having to drive the old Dyane, although the fact that it had a fog light earned some favourable comments earlier this week...

Yes, it's the '76 Dyane, currently my only car! I think the carb is the original, I'll have a look at the metal tag tomorrow and let you know what the numbers are. The main jet definitely had "106" engraved on it, haven't investigated the others yet. I cut a pair of gaskets - one for each side of the insulation block - and that seems to have done the trick. It's still pinking, though ... next step will be to investigate the plugs.

Rhythm Thief,
is this the mid-70s Dyane? ( I've lost track of what's in your rotating stock at the moment... ;) )
Anyway, an earlier Dyane should have had the 21-24 version of the 26/35 carburettor on which the petrol jets would have been 120 (or 125) and 70.
Also, there weren't any paper gaskets used under the carburettors ex works.
I find that flatting off the carburettor base with a file, to correct any bowing caused by over-tightening the nuts, plus a thin coat of Wellseal on both sides of the spacer block will work fine.

I'm sure I put a new main jet on the Beige Beast....125 I think that I got from Roy...I had a lot of problems with pinking when I first got it back on the road but eradicated over a period. When I changed the rings, the cylinder tops had a fair amount of carbon build up on them which probably contributed to pre-ignition problems but this shouldn't be an issue with you now.

That's not foggy enough for a fog light! ;) Fog lights are for when you can't see your hand in front of your face. All they do otherwise is make brake lights harder to spot.

Drove all the way to the MOT test centre with my brakes jammed on - drove all the way home - fixed the problem - drove all the way to the MOT test centre - he is too busy this afternoon - made an appointment for Monday.

Nothing is easy..... :(

Reset the timing on the Dyane ... turns out that the marks on the flywheel were two teeth out from "peg in hole" setting.

Pinking. Timing was slightly too advanced. Seems ok now, but I haven't gone up any hills in fourth gear yet ... we'll see how it is on the way to work tonight.

Errr,
that was after the fog had lifted.
At one point, it was impossible to see the house from halfway down the garden, so barely 50 metres visibilty.
Official recommendation is to switch lights on when visibility is less than 100 metres.
No mention of hand in front of face, either...
