I don't understand it. A mobile telephone is progress, it is useful. It is more advantageous than not having one. I accept that. Having a telephone that does anything more than make calls and so on is no more technological progress than equipping a microwave with windscreen wipers.

Haha. Had to laugh at that..!!!!!

I suppose the advantage is that you don't have to potentially carry around half a dozen gadgets... Most people love their smartphones for that very fact, even if they don't excel in any one thing that they do (although I understand that the iPhone takes amazing pics, and there's a Nokia phone that does the same).

For me, though, it's the price of these things that's the problem. Mind you, I hear that the trendy market will be moving on to other gadgets this year, and smartphones will become cheaper, with all sorts of phones becoming available. There'll even be a cheap iPhone, I understand.

I know I sound like a stubborn Luddite but my life has not changed a jot since doing away with complicated Internet camera phone things, except now I don't have to worry if I drop it, lose it or flush it down the khazi.

If there is only one phone to have then it can't possibly be the fickle fashion glitter from the trendy mind of Steve Jobs, I'll go for one of the slightly more robust designs from the drawing board of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.

i have an iPhone 4s, also had the 3gs. My current one does everything i need, pics, vids(my DSLR eats batteries) mobile banking (as i have no car to go to the bank in) that is, only when I'm at my gf's using the WIFI. The trouble is when your left in a position like i was late last year with family breakdown, loss of job and home you forget to pay your bill sometimes.. I'm now extortionately behind on my contract (been cut off) and have nowt to pay it off with. Thus leaving me with a £30 a month iPod. Best option for me? Pinch an old Sony Ericsson and get a PAYG sim, oh, and don't tell anyone your new number! life is soo much quieter!

It is possible to have a phone that isn't an indestructible brick from the middle ages, without smashing it, dropping it, losing it... If you pay decent money for something you look after it no? I got an Iphone over two years ago and its still going strong, not had to replace screens or anything like that. Before you say WELL YOU DON'T HAVE A JOB WHERE IT'LL FALL OUT YOUR POCKET AND SOMEHOW SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST , I've got mates who sucessfully navigate their way through a day in the life of -insert trade here- without being a clumsy twat and breaking their snazzy phones they've just worked to pay for. Get that shit dealt with.

My phone was up for renewal and it cost me nothing to 'upgrade' and I get the added bonus of unlimited phone calls, unlimited text and free use of BT 'Openzone' when out and about, all for £25pm. I'd rather had more than the 250MB on 3G, but I've never got close to it on the old phone, so I can't see me getting too close with the iPhone. I ended up with an iPhone4 as the 4S and 5 would have cost extra and I honestly didn't see the point in the 'extras'.

The Sony Ericsson I had before the Xperia was an amazing phone. I dropped it a few times, the battery lasted the best part of a week (even after 4yrs of use), and a trip from Worcester to Fort William in torrential rain and gale force winds resulted in a phone full of water (it was sat on the vent/wiper-motor cover in the 2CV), yet worked perfectly after a night sat on a hot radiator. I doubt the iPhone would manage that, but I've not placed my phone there since, so it shouldn't end up full of water. :)

Jonathan

When i had a dunk in the sea after the tubes on a rib fell off, (in water say 2 mins and its salt) my iphonemafter a few days in a sealed rice container in the airing cupboard was fine...

Apart from the camera which its led was on permantly...

29.99 later from ebay i fitted it all was well (new whole camera)

I did a few weeks later leave it to cook in the egyptian sun for a week just to be safe but it was fully working by then
