It's getting increasingly hard to find a good quality basic phone these days. I've just been trying to persuade Orange (or "EE" as they now like to be known) that I don't want a smart phone, all I want is a basic mobile, but not the one designed for children or old people (although, come to think of it ... ) Anyway, they've managed to locate a five year old refurbished model whose number I forget, so that's me sorted.
I wanted an iphone for a while - my girlfriend has one for work and I was really impressed with it when it first arrived - but one night I went to the pub with my brother. As we walked in, there was a table near the door with about six people sitting at it. All with their pints untouched on the table, all sitting in silence each doing Facebook on their iphones. I resolved then that I'd never be that sad.

For me the iphones great. If im on a. Boat i can take pictures, use a chart on it, (not that i can accuratly read charts) do all my emails, transfer money on my phone etc

My 'mrs also has one and spends no end of time farting about on facebook on these stupid selling sites....

I dont likr the whole 'oh lets fb that / youtube that' type thing......

In the whole the ipad and iphone means i use my pc once a month probably, although it sits in the garage (where my desk is) running in winter so it doesnt freeze itself!!!

Have you tried dropping it off of a table, covering it with sand/cement dust, showering it with grinding sparks, welding spatter etc? Load of old bollocks. Wouldn't last a week. My boss got his the same week I got my refurbed 3310 (£11.99) and he dropped it two days later which smashed the touch screen and the casing. It's ok having some prissy gay lord overblown telephone fashion thing but if it doesn't work in the real world there's little point to it. My phone is still going, no problems, and even if it wasn't I could buy another thirty of them for the same outlay as an iPhone or similar office homo flouncy poofter style telephone.

I have the Samsung B2710 Solid (had the 2100 Solid), both are absolutely nukeproof (and actually waterproof), the only phones in my life I haven't had any issues with. I recently shut my BX's tailgate with the edge right across this thing's screen and nothing happened. The battery lasted 2 weeks when new, which is worse than a Nokia 6310 I had that could run for almost 3 weeks, but still better than the ridiculous 2 or 3 days of many smartphones. Has a big rubber keypad, a flashlight activated by a separate button on the casing and can be washed in the sink after a day's work on a greasy car - best phone I've had.

Talking of near-death experiences for phones, I once drove from Apeldoorn to Arnhem down the A50 motorway, all the way wondering where the hell I'd put my mobile phone. Parked up in Arnhem and found the answer:

I don't understand why 'smart' phones are so popular. I've had phones with internets on them and they're not as good as an actual internets off the computer. The camera isn't as good as an actual camera, none of the features are as good as a device designed specifically for that purpose. It's like saying 'I've got 500 quids worth of second rate electrical products in my pocket, so I can be as trendy as possible'

Internet: doable, but also with an iPad the letters are too small. Laptop or computer are better. but for some facebooking, banking, quick forums check, email, I prefer use my phone because it's quicker than booting my laptop ;)
Camera: buy a sony phone ;)

Smartphone are like VW Golfs.. You buy one because your neighbor has one ;)

Still, once I had my first smart(er)phone, I now want a better one every time.. Expensive hobby that is

I don't understand it. A mobile telephone is progress, it is useful. It is more advantageous than not having one. I accept that. Having a telephone that does anything more than make calls and so on is no more technological progress than equipping a microwave with windscreen wipers.
