I can see where you're coming from but....

I bloody hope I'm slightly more superior than this! ;)

Chaps, get off your high horses about football! Violence is nothing new at mass spectator events, and it's not confined to football by any means. In fact, there are recorded incidents of crowd riots at the amphitheatres of ancient Rome. Pompeii's "fans" were the most notorious. Here's an account and picture of the most infamous of Pompeii's many riots:

Quote:

"About this time [AD 59] there was a serious fight between the inhabitants of two Roman settlements, Nuceria and Pompeii. It arose out of a trifling incident at a gladiatorial show....During an exchange of taunts—characteristic of these disorderly country towns—abuse led to stone-throwing, and then swords were drawn. The people of Pompeii, where the show was held, came off best. Many wounded and mutilated Nucerians were taken to the capital. Many bereavements, too, were suffered by parents and children. The emperor instructed the senate to investigate the affair. The senate passed it to the consuls. When they reported back, the senate debarred Pompeii from holding any similar gathering for ten years. Illegal associations in the town were dissolved; and the sponsor of the show and his fellow-instigators of the disorders were exiled."

Tacitus, Annals (XIV.17)
(More here.)

Here's an article about famous sporting rumbles. By no means all to do with the "Beautiful Game".

And here's a photo of Ladies' Day at Ascot. Classy! (Note bloke being clobbered with a champers bottle.)

Been to the footie lately? I have. It's pretty bloody tame these days, I can tell you. In fact, I've heard (though I can't find the figures) that in the last 10 years there have been more arrests at the horse races than there are at the football.

Having attended 100's of football matches during my police service and not being a fan,I can only sat the gratuitous violence has never ceased to amaze me and at times have me in serious fear for my safety.

Difference between Roman times and now is that we're 'supposed' to be far more civilised in the 21st Century. No point in looking back at past events and comparing it to where we are today. When was the last time the authorities hanged, draw and quarter somebody? :)

I don't object to people 'professionally' kicking balls around.
I object to them being paid 100x in a week what a nurse earns to do so.
