So can we assume that it's improved further in the subsequent 20 years, and change the oil every 8 or 10 thousand miles?

I'll stick with what's worked for me since buying that Dyane new in 1980, but it's worth bearing in mind that 'hours of running' rather than 'mileage covered' is a better guide to when oil should be changed and that the 3,000 mile oil and filter change is a carry over from the days of monograde, low detergent oils.

i aim to change every 3000 miles, but realisticly its not that regular..
simply because i believe in regular oil changes to keep an enigine healthy but thats just my opinion!
