I chose the cross over 'GB' because GB is a misnomer - Britain is not 'Great' anymore, and it hasn't been since the 1950's. Let's stop kidding ourselves.

It's called Great Britain from the french 'Grande Bretagne' to differentiate us from Brittany, not because we thought we were great (Which we were, of course) :)

Then surely Bretagne should be called 'Little Britain'

Well, if you're talking about under-used words, the UK and the EU then we could do worse than to mention the word "subsidiarity". There, I've done it!

One of the funny old things that I seem to get embroiled in now and again are legal actions, mainly because I speak up when silence might be wiser.

One side effect of having occasionally appeared in court though, is that I developed an interest in law, and in the Maxims of law. Mention of Subsidiarity, has made me think of the Maxims of law. Contained within those Maxims are the following passages;

Re: Treaties of Maastricht, Lisbon et al.

"Actus incaeptus cujus perfectio pendet, ex voluntate partium, revocari potest; si autem pendet ex voluntate tertia personae, vel ex contingenti, revocari non potest."
An act already begun, the completion of which depends upon the will of the parties, may be recalled. Bacon's Max. Reg. 20.

...or more interestingly,

"Clausula quae abrogationem excludit ab initio non valet."
A clause in a law which precludes its abrogation, is invalid from the beginning. Bacon's Max. Reg. 19, p. 89.

And better still, I got the word 'Abrogation' in. 8-)

Funny you should say that, Old-Nail.

Brittany has also been referred to as Less, Lesser or Little Britain (as opposed to Great Britain).

That was taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brittany

I'm not for one minute suggesting you're unaware of this fact, Old-Nail, but just in case there are some folk out there (especially from other countries) who are unware, I'll just add this :-

The British isles are an archipelago of over 1000 islands. There is the island of Ireland, the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, the Isle of Man, the Inner Hebrides and Outer Hebrides, Orkney Isles and of course, the Shetland Isles. But the main island of the British isles is Great Britain, which has the majority of the land of England, Scotland and Wales.

Below is a piece from Wikipedia:-

All of the island is territory of the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and most of the United Kingdom's territory is in Great Britain. Most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island of Great Britain, as are their respective capital cities: London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff.

PS:- I'll just add, it's good to have you back, it helps to give this forum a "pub" feel. 8-)

I know GB is not only England, but also Scotland, Wales, and N. Ireland and that GB Is a group of Islands .
In fact I lived and worked in England for a couple of years in the 70'tes .
But then you did not have this rediculous attachment to your registration plates with stars and NL or GB or what ever country you are a resident in .
I merely wondered the fact that it was ENG on the registration plate instead of GB.

Apart of being in the EU we, in Holland , also are part of the monetary system called Euro.
WE did not ask for being part of the EU,neither we were asked to give up our Gilden coin.
But we , the tax-payers, can pay to help Greece, and other countries ,to get out of debt for which the politicians of these countries are responsable.
And our own politicians are also responsable for this , because they allowed these countries to take part in the Euro, even if the did not comply with the minimal conditions.
You can fiddle with your accounts , and others look the other way, and the citizens of the different countries will have te believe that everything is genuine and fair.
The EU did not bring us any good, but we cannot stop it, and I think that is very unfair. It is an politic desicion which is not in the interest of the civilians .

That is what they told us in school.

Orange women are the sort who fake tan and slap on tons of make up, the sort who use polli filler for wrinkles, the tan literally turns them orange! Btw what's 'Abrogation'?

Geert It is a typically British way of saying that we don't like each other really.
And don't even get me started on vanity plates (number plates that spell names)

So do I, which is why I am against the federal EU. It is undemocratic to have laws imposed on you rather than make your own.
Also the EU is corrupt, it has fiddled millions upon millions of Euro's and 'lost' them, which is why it's accounts are never signed off. If a business was run this way then it would be held to account by law, not so the unelected EU.

Ah...but that's no fun. ;)

Britany is called that as it was settled by original Brits maybe as Saxons came along. It may be true that the French made distinction between Great Britain and Brittany but it actually goes back earlier.... The Roman brainiac Ptolemy called the larger island Megale Brettania (Great Britain) and the smaller island Micra Bretannia (Little Britain) (Don't think the Irish would be to chuffed!)

In general directional terms 'yeh! it's on the 'great' big british island and just over there a bit! :P
