engine jacked to get cowlings off? didnt realise that  i assume i undo the box and just jack the engine up, is there really no way to get cowlings off without removing the engine in the air a bit???

no its only the front that needs to be lifted slightly, the fan cowling is attached to the front mounts and you have to take the weight off them as well as getting clearance to pull the fan housing forward over the engine bearer

Two things to bear in mind:
FFS, don't try and do them up to the torque settings in Haynes. That'll almost certainly result in stripped threads.
The braided pipes Roy (ECAS) sells are a good bit longer than the standard thing. This is fine for engines run without the cooling shrouds, but on a standard engine they can be a bit tricky to fit. It's worth a bit of effort though, since the standard oil pipe is crap.

Post Re: oil pipes
well i dont mind a bit more effort, its the kind of job i want to do and look at it in 20 years and remeber id done it!!

sorta put it on and forget about it!
well once ive got the parts and read haynes manual and understood what im doing, ill ask the torque rench settings!
how fiddly are you talking when it comes to the pipes? are they physically any bigger? how tricky are we talking, any tips?

They're not especially hard to fit, they're just slighly larger in diameter and a good bit longer, which means that you have to bundle up the extra length inside the cowling without running the pipe anywhere it wll kink or chafe. It just needs a bit of thinking about is all.

Post Re: oil pipes
so im thinking of tackiling this job this week if im not working during the week, how long would you say it would take a muppet (me) to change the oil pipes? or do you think i should wait until i do an oil change?
also the oil breather, it looks like i can change it without removing any crap such as alternator, is this correcT? also what tension should i do them too, are they going into alimunum ?? dont want to strip threads you see !
