what's the general consensus on these?

specifically 'metal on metal protection' - replace the lead type stuff???

Serious waste of good money is my opinion. If you look after your engine [regular oil changes] and keep the air ways clean, 2CV engines are fine.

2nd that

fuel additives, fuel catalists, magnets etc a waste of time and cash

Have not had any problems with unleaded on my car, and it's now on 193,000miles. Save your money for something else.

I thought later A series were always fine with unleaded anyway as unleaded was common before the end of production? I certainly haven't worried about it.

A-series heads are ally. Ally heads need valve seat inserts.

Cast iron heads often didn't have valve seat inserts, because the lead provided the protection. Remove the lead, and you're left with a relatively soft seat, which suffers from recession.

The official line from Citroen was that all engines from number <whatever> were OK - but AIUI the suspicion's always been that that was just the number of the engine they tested, since the part number for the head didn't change.

Reason for asking was, in this warmer weather, my engine won’t fire up straight away when the engine is hot – takes a couple of goes. A friend suggested that it might be because the exhaust valves aren’t quite doing what they’re supposed to, so a teaspoon of Castrol Valvemaster into a full tank would “make all the difference”……not sure it’s made any, to be honest…..but – will it harm the valves??? Seats????

And is the hot starting problem just one of those twin pot nuances???

Usually, everyone says "coil" which is certainly what happened to me recently. I've also been told it depends how you give it throttle on startup - foot to the floor, then turn the key and back off the throttle when it kicks in is a tip I've been told.
