We looked at buying new even used bottle, forget it. Hiring is not cheap but will eventually go for it + new MIG's cost and arm and a leg. So used it will be, don't know what brand but will ask here when time come. Well the local pub in our little village is nothing but num-nuts, won't go there.

Don't you get the little "Soda-Stream" bottles over there?

Post Re: Which Welder???
I bought a 2nd-hand welder recently on eBay after doing a fair bit of research. Most of what I discovered reflects what's said in the above posts.

Main points I found were:

1) The welder needs to get down to around 25-30 Amps if it ain't going to blow holes in the A's thin panels, so don't consider anything that won't do this. On t'other hand, you'll need 90+ Amps to weld chassis & suspension parts - ie: 3mm-ish plate.

2) Gas is far superior to gas-less, BUT gas can cost a fortune if you don't sort out an alternative supply such as ex-pub CO2 cylinders. Perhaps look for a dual-purpose welder, tho' they are less common. (Dual-use welders need the facility to reverse the gun's polarity.)

3) Spit if you like, but Clarke has one of the best reputations if you are going for a budget brand. From what I understand, the Clarke models have better wire feeders, a common problem area with cheaper machines. Sealey, I think, was one common brand to avoid for this reason, tho' worth carrying out your own research on this in case I got it wrong! There's LOTS of good info out there, but also a lot of strong opinions and 'prejudice' (a bit like here, then! ;) )

4) Get yourself an automatic face mask, one that darkens as soon as it registers arc light. This will free you hands and make a huge difference.

(Gas-less works by using a wire which has a flux coating on it. As it burns, the flux vaporises and releases a shrouding gas - this takes the place of your usual gas supply, tho' it's not nearly as effective. Gas-less welds should be ok strength-wise, but generally won't be as neat as 'gas' ones. One area in which gas-less wins, tho', is if you need to weld outdoors and there's a breeze!)

cant beat 93/5/2 argon co2 o2 whether its in a Boc argoshield bottle or a Air Products Cougar

£61 for the middle sized bottle (almost too big to move) which included the rental on the special offer BOC were doing, thats hours of welding for the same price as 30 mins or so of disposable welding

co2 can be funny( nitrogen mix) and some machines dont perform as well on it
compare here

used gasless once as id run out of gas, horrible horrible horrible messy and horrible

make sure you put some decent batterys in there though, a friend of mine his batterys died when he was welding and he got bad arc eye

I've been happily using a cheepo Aldi gasless for all my little welding jobs.... set low for 2cv tin and up high for cracked cast iron!... A steady hand and the ability to wield an angle grinder like a scalpel makes up for a lot! ( +++ :? having to do it all outdoors!?)

Throwing money at class welding gear is not gonna make much difference If you can't drill a straight hole with a drill, cut freehand along a line with a board knife or use any sort of tool/power tool with any kind of accuracy!

hmm

Hmmm.

Most reactorlight masks are solar powered, only cheap shit tends to be battery operated. A brief flash won't give you arc eye.

I was loaned a gasless welder last year and after weeks of practising, my welds were hopeless. I gave in and took the bodyshell to a professional to have the work done. Since then every single professional welder I've spoken to told me to NEVER, EVER use gasless welders as they are crap.

don't waste money on Clarke shit.

Are you just talking cheap Clarke or ANYTHING they make? We have a huge trolley-borne Clarke welder in our garage (the gas bottle is almost as tall as me) and those who are much more experienced than me would have its babies.

In addition to finding one that turns down low enough, I'd also look for one with a Euro torch. The nozzles and liners on the torch do wear and it makes a big difference to be able to service it.

I too have a Cebora, though its not branded Snap on. The BOC Autolynx welders are pretty good as well. No way would I spend money on a gasless MIG, having tried one I don't think I'd even spend the fuel on collecting a free one. It is just pure misery.

There are "lost" mig bottles all over the place that can be utilised if you find someone with an account BTW. I've bitten the bullet and get a bottle from Air Products, pub gas works well also.
